Day Hiker
Price Paid:
$139.00
at zbsports.com Summary: I've been looking for a hiking boot that would help with my sesamoiditis (inflammation of big toe). With these shoes, my toe doesn't hurt. I have a pair of boots (stealth) and the toe hurt really bad with those shoes on any uneven surface. The montrail does not hurt to walk over uneven surfaces like grass and in the woods due to the shank but the shoe still feels flexible enough and there is a toe rocker built in the shoe without being overly rocking (only the toe really rocks not the whole foot). I wear 13 in most athletic shoes and this shoe may be slightly on the long side although there is no slippage and I have decided not to get the 12 1/2. I consider the width and volume of my foot average and the width is about perfect (the toes are not tight as well). Also, I like shoes that do not have a big heel so that there is not pressure on the front of my foot and this shoe does not place pressure on the front of the foot so that I could stand in them probably all day (I like my birkenstock professional rubber shoes for their complete flatness while standing but they are not as good for walking. The montrails are pretty flat though as well).

at Blue Ridge Mountain Summary: Have had a pair for two years and wear them intermittently with my other boots (Salomon, Lowa, Merrell)which are all excellent boots, but in my recovery from recent foot surgery, have found that for all around support and comfort, the Torre GTX has offered the best of these attributes. This boot at present conforms perfectly to my particular feet, solid without an excessively "cushiony" feel. at Exkursion Summary: Bought these boots outside of the Pittsburgh area. Have been breaking them in for day hikes and out about town for about a year. Just got back from a weekend trip and my feet will never be normal again. Thought they were too narrow when I bought them. Took them back and the employee assured me they were the right size - I've learned my lesson. Worst backpacking/hiking experience of my life and all due to the shoes.

at REI Outlet Summary: I'm from Montana, but I bought these boots for a 30+ mile backpack through Haleakala National Park in Maui, Hawaii. Even though they fit welll right out of the box, I took the time to wear them around town and at work for about one month before the trip. They broke in super fast and were more than ready for the trail in Maui. The trails in Haleakala are predominately sand and lava rock, both of which can be very hard on footwear. These boots held up great. The fit, particularly in the snug and secure heel pocket, was the best feature for me. My heel fit snug and didn't move around at all. They didn't give me blisters, hot spots, or foot cramps and held up well in the rain and watery conditions in the Paliku area of the Park which is on the edge of a rainforest. I have always worn light/breatheable low-top hiking shoes before these, but I will be wearing these boots now on the majority of my spring, summer, and fall backpacking trips around Montana and Idaho. I managed to get these for a steep discount but I would have easily paid full price had I known how well they were going to perform. I wish I had bought another pair at the sale. Best boots I've had in a long time.

at Champaign Surplus Summary: I purchased these boots in the wide version for a more comfortable fit. The original insoles were replaced with Superfeet to proide more arch support. The boots were thouroughly broken in through everyday use at school, work, etc. Boots are comfortable in all settings and the GTX keeps snow, ice, and water at bay.
These boots were my only shoes For a spring break geology field trip. I wore these boots continuously for a week in the Mojave and Sonoran deserts and Death Valley. Leather uppers provide ample protection against rocks, cacti, and rolling your ankles. Vibram soles are flexible and comfortable while sticky enough to grip polished limestone and marble. Yet, the soles are durable enough to withstand abuse from granite, vesicular lava flows, and other coarse grained, angular rocks. Boots were comfortable in temperatures ranging from 30F-85F. They can be a little warm in the desert sun.
I have yet to find any serious faults with these boots. Plus, they are very stylish.
I would recommend these boots to anyone who enjoys day, weekend, or even extended trips. Good support for a 50-60 pound pack and flexible enough for scrambles and moderate bouldering. Great three and possibly four season boot. Keep feet dry and comfortable. I am preparing to wear these boots for three months in Europe with a 50 pound backpack.
