Summary:
2004 Model
Light Light Light!!! I upgraded from the Burton Rulers and what a gigantic difference the Ions MD make.

LACING
The lacing system is great. The inner lining has regular lacing up to the ankles, instead of up to the shins. This lets you really tighten your foot down to prevent heel lift. The top is tightened by a velcro strap. It's fast and somewhat convenient. The only problem is the velcro sticks to the boot when it's hanging loose but that's a smalle inconvenience.

WEIGHT
Definitely one of the lightest boots on the market. It's 2 lbs lighter than the Rulers.

COMFORT
Great cushioning all around, including the tongue to reduce strap pressure. It has Burton's BoneOut on the tongue which gives added comfort.

STIFFNESS/FLEX
Without the plastic insert, these boots are as flexible as a pair of converse. The Burton website says its a 6/10 stiffness without the plastic. Definitely NOT true. It's more like a 2. I'm basing this on the stiffness of the Rulers, which Burton rates as a 6/10 stiffness. With the plastic insert, the stiffness is very similar to the Rulers (6). If you want something stiffer, head over to the Ion HD Drivers.

When will Burton get smart and offer varying inserts so riders can choose their stiffness?

Price Paid:  $224.00 at Mt. Snow

Summary:
Considering that my old boots would make my feet kill at the end of the day, the Ion MD kicks ass. They are light and have the amount of flex that I am looking for in a boot. When I put them on for the first time, I fell in love. No discomfort and they fit perfectly. Feet stay warm and absorb landings well.

Price Paid:  $279.00 at Outdoor Sports Cente

Summary:
I tried on a ton of boots this season and I was very impressed with the 02/03 Burton line, huge improvement over past seasons. I decided to go with the Ion MD because it felt the best. I simply choose the MD liner over the HD liner for fit. The HD seemed real comfy, but the MD fit my foot like a glove so opted for them. The MD is suppose to be a medium flex boot, but with the added tounge insert I found them to be quite stiff which was definitely a bonus.

Summary:
I got to demo the ion at the burton shop in govy. camp this summer- I actually don't know for sure if i rode the MD or the HD, but since they were softer than my rulers im assuming they were the MD's. I loved them. They were paper-light, and I had no foot pain. I kind of wanted a little more stiffness, so hopefully i was riding the MD's. I love my rulers, but the ions were sweet.
