Old Town Penobscot 16 Canoe Canoes

DESCRIPTION

A fine day tripping or wilderness tripping canoe for two!. Straight-on speed, handling ease and capacity make this an all-around performance canoe. This versatile canoe is excellent in flat water, but also does well in fast waters. Rounded bottom provides turning responsiveness, while its sharp bow entry and straight keel line make it easy to paddle. Features polyethylene decks with grab handles, ash portage yoke and thwart, and ash-framed cane seats.

The Penobscot is an awesome canoe. It is relatively light, and hauls a considerable payload. It is not a high volume whitewater boat, but can withstand fast water abuse. It is easy and quick to paddle, tracks well, yet is very manuverable. Great primary and secondary stability. It's moderate depth cheats the wind well. The Royalex hull doesn't "grab onto" rocks like the aluminum boats. A great all around boat.

This canoe is the Swiss army knife of inland waters. At 58 pounds, it both cartops and portages with ease. The Oltonar/Royalex hull is best described as "tough." This past year I beached rocky shorelines and dragged the canoe over steep embankments. Scratches, yes. Structural damage, none. On the water, it carries two paddlers and a full compliment of gear with ease. I have soloed using Old Town's add-on plastic center seat, but found that positioning the seat in front of the portage yoke (the only practical location for leg room)did pose some navigational challenges on windy open water. With two paddlers, this canoe turns crisply and holds a line with ease. Given it's 16-foot length, the Penobscot 16 is at home on inland lakes, large and small, as well as rivers with Class I & II rapids. This canoe is ideal for the weekend camping twosome.

Great canoe. Easy to handle in and out of the water. Handles well in variety of waters, and holds planty of gear for weekend trips. Weighs in at 58lbs, which makes it easy to put up on the truck. The royalex matierial has taken a few hard blows and is holding up better then expected.

Customer Service

LL Bean customer service is by far the best on the planet, haven't had a reason to go to them about the canoe, but every other experience w/ LL Bean has been very pleasant and always come out very happy.
