Reviewed by: Alan ,  50+ days a year , from New Zealand

Price Paid:  $180.00 at Tisdalls

Body of Water:
Lake Taupo and environs

Favorite City:
Auckland

Favorite Country:
New Zealand

Summary:
This line is now in it's fourth season of use. A large part of that has been in water with pumice grit, which is v hard on lines. It has handled this with no cracking visible as yet, and still shoots well. I agree with other reviewers that it is a little stiffer than some brands, but it doesn't have a wicked memory, and does seem to mend well on fast water.

Strengths:
durability, shoots v. well, and handles gusty days (WF9),doesn't tangle easily.

Weaknesses:
I wld like to be able to buy in some other colour than hot lime green, fish seem unperturbed though.

Customer Service:
Not needed, but they have exc. rep. here

Price Paid:  $46.00 at Indiana Angler

Body of Water:
East and West Branch Clarion River

Favorite City:
Wilcox

Favorite State:
PA

Favorite Country:
USA

Summary:
SA and Air flo are my choices. Cortland are the popular fly line of the east. But there are better out there.

Strengths:
None I clean my fly lines after each trip. And this line breaks down all the time I used 2 lines in 4 months because the first one cracked so much. I guess you get what you pay for.

Weaknesses:
Cracks easily and does not cast as well as others.

Customer Service:
They did replace my first fly line the first time and i didn't even bother on the second time

Reviewed by: Anonymous User ,  40 days a year , from Katrineholm, Sweden

Price Paid:  $65.00

Body of Water:
Lappland

Favorite Country:
Sweden and Norway

Summary:
Min absoluta favoritlina!

Reviewed by: Anonymous User ,  50+ days a year , from Encino, Ca.

Price Paid:  $46.00

Body of Water:
Lower McCloud

Summary:
The Cortland 444sl series of lines do tend to be very stiff, and in some applications this could be an advantage and in others a disadvantage. The line I used was a WF5 which casted very well to distance. The most useful aspect of having a stiff line was its superb mendability. This was the easiest mending line, especially with a heap of line out, that I have fished. Additionally, the stiffness allowed the line to remain tangle free under my feet and seemed to enhance the shootability of the line.

One drawback to using this stiff line was when casting delicately to spooky fish in close quarters. I found it difficult to cast this WF without a little slap on the water when compared to more pliant lines like Scientific Anglers’s GPX or XPS.

Another issue is the reputation this line has acquired for the coating to crack which leads to many troubles including hinging while casting and mending, water saturation which leads to sinking, and overall deterioration. My particular line did not do this after 2 years of fishing. I was told Cortland fixed the problem and that if this did happen one could send their line back to Cortland for a replacement.

Overall I would recommend this line for distance casters with stiff, fast action rods. I can cast farther and mend more efficiently with this line out of the box better than any other I have tried so far, and most importantly it doesn’t form that man sized spider web under your feet.

Strengths:
Excellent mending and good distance caster. Moderately priced.

Weaknesses:
Stiff for fishing in close.

Summary:
This is my favorate line. It carries better while false casting than any others I've tried. The stiffness seems to allow the line to shoot better through the rod guides than more supple lines. The 444sl also seems to roll cast quite well. I use mostly Sage and Loomis fast and medium fast action rods and this line loads them well at all distances. The line does begin to show signs of cracking after two years of use, but I use my 444sl's considerably more often than any other line and I fish 4 seasons. At under $50 this is an outstanding line.

Strengths:
stiff coating

Weaknesses:
cracking
