Price Paid:  $52.00

Body of Water:
Colorado/Wyoming

Summary:
If you look below this review you'll see other fisherman complain that the line cracks, isn't durable, is to heavy for a rod etc. Remember that this line is made for large rivers and fast rods. NOT for small water with light little rods. (XPS for the eastern water) I've had a GPX for three full seasons, and it has done it's job well. I take care of my line, cleaning it and coating it properly. It's lasted through upwards of 200 trips. It has cracked in spots, but it hasn't affected the performance at all. And if I hadn't tugged on it when it was stuck on rocks etc, it probably wouldn't have a crack in it. I use it on a 4wt Sage SP, Winston WT 5wt, and Winston LT 4wt. It is a very good line. There is a reason this is the best selling line in most fly shops. Take care of your stuff and it'll take care of you. Go buy this line!

Summary:
Stick with the SA XPS or RIO. Try the Loop Fly Lines if you can get them. The GPX, even though it is designed to be a little heavier, does not improve its castability. I had sever others try the line and they had a similiar feeling. Most lines will feel fine in you are only casting them and cannot try another line immeediately to get a comparsion. These are my feelings only and I am sure others will differ.

Strengths:
Smmoth AST Coating.

Weaknesses:
Line seems " heavy" It is a half weight heavier than a similar line of the same weight. I made seveal tests casting this line against others and to me it was last in all areas of performance...distance, presentation and feel. I prefer the SA XPS, the RIO Windcutter and the Loop Distance Line.

Customer Service:
Talked to SA's customer support. Told me to go down a line size and try that.

Summary:
This line is my favorite WF3 line for delicate presentations. It is supple, mends well, and the gray coating seems to not spook fish. I think my bush whacking, puddle dumping, rod flailing, and hyper casting probably do more to scare away fish than anything else, but the gray line does give me more confidence to sneak up on fish.

The only problem I have with it is its tendency to knot up under your feet. The line is extremely resilient and soft. It is this quality, which makes it a good line for delicate presentations, that allows the line to tangle. One way I have learned to avoid this somewhat is to create neat coils in my striping hand so there is less chance the line will knot up. It is not a 100% solution, but it helps.

Strengths:
Soft, supple, quiet coating that blends in.

Weaknesses:
The limpness tends to knot.

Summary:
I have one S.A. Mastery GPX fly line in a WF6 Floating.
With my bamboo fly rods the line picks up off the water with ease. The line shoots out the guides when being laid down to dimpling fish, it lands lightly for a 6wt. line. A real joy to cast. Cleaning the line is done with a damp cloth. My line is a optic green color making it very easy to see on the water. At $50 it is a little spendy but in my opion quite worth the money. Memory has improved tremendously over the last 25 years, that's the lack of memory.

Strengths:
supple, easy casting, easy pickup

Weaknesses:
spendy

Customer Service:
Haven't needed any.

Body of Water:
Stillwater

Summary:
A good line if you don't fish often or don't mind changing lines often. Otherwise, I think SA has lot the plot.

Strengths:
Casts, shoots and handles well when new.

Weaknesses:
Poor durability. Cracks after 3 months and is completely stuffed after 6 months fishing. Admittedly I fish often and hard but after several years with SA in which I have replaced more than 8 lines, I no longer can be bothered. I know PVC lines crack but this is ridiculous. The best line I have used was an SA bass bug taper - the bottom of the line model - in ice blue made before the 3com takeover. After that it's been all downhill. By comparison I have a Cortland intermediate which is 10 years old and still going strong. Took away a brand new 7WFF GPX on a 2 week trip. It was cleaned every day. It was showing wear and on the way out after 10 days. Have experienced the knotty problems too, but that is often the price of shootable, thin running lines.
