Price Paid:  $275.00 at New Jersey sporting

Summary:
Bought about 8 years ago. Fishes great, really learned to fly fish with this rod. Due to sentimental value, I may exaggerate. Own 8'6" 4 wt. 2-piece. I'd say moderate to moderate-fast action. Slower than my sage slt 389-4 and loomis 9' 5 wt. gl3. Great rod. Plays larger fish extremely well and can handle anything I've thrown on it. Nice green color matches well with diff. colored reels. Very light weight, moderate-action, yet has some backbone.

Customer Service:
Great. Due to a family member's mal-treatment of the rod several years ago, I broke the tip. St. Croix fixed it. Not many questions asked. Was very pleased with their service. Very efficient.

Similar Products Used:
Sage SLT 389-4. G loomis GL3 1085. Fish with a 9' 7 wt. g loomis glx for steelhead, probably my favorite rod due to the fact that it covers every casting situation I have put it up against extremely well and can handle monster fish in swift currents.

Price Paid:  $280.00 at Feather-Craft

Summary:
This is a great rod (UFT864). If you are worried about the slipping problems some have mentioned, don't be. I've fished G.Loomis and Sage rods that are much worse. If you put the rod together properly, and cast with reasonably good technique, you won't have a problem. Anyway, doesn't everyone reach up and check the butt section once in a while? I've caught everything from 8 inch native brookies in Western Maryland to 20 inch cutthroat in Idaho on this rod.

Customer Service:
I was fishing in 20-25 degree weather last year when I got hung-up on a backcast with about 50-60 ft. of line out. I jerked too hard and the rod snapped. I sent it back and it was replaced free of charge in about two weeks. Need I say any more?

Price Paid:  $0.00

Summary:
If you are looking for a really fast cannon that will throw an entire line stay away from the the 2pc (and you should also stay off the spring creeks). But if you are looking for the absolute best spring creek rod for the money - read on. I can not say enough good things about this rod. Landed 7 rainbows over 20 in. yesterday, and beautifully presented a 16 ft leader at 40-50 ft on another stream.

Silky moderate action, that throws a range of loops (critical in spring creek fishing), tight to open. Will load quickly for short casts, and has enough strength (not stiffness) in the butt to play truly large fish an light tippets.

I own tons of rods, including several 4 wts from Sage, Scott and Winston, but when I really want to fish, this is the one I pick up.

St. Croix got it right!!

Customer Service:
Outstanding.

Reviewed by: chthonic ,  50+ days a year

Price Paid:  $200.00 at Somewhere Online

Summary:
OK rod with some huge drawbacks: namely the sections keep separating
from each other while casting and the reel seat swells if you get it wet
making it nearly impossible to attach your reel again. They call this rod fast
when at best it's moderate/fast. I have the Legend Ultra 5 piece travel version
which is much faster than the 2 piece that has a moderate action. The 5 piece
will cast dry flies very well - if you can keep it together - but don't expect to
boss around a weighted nymph or wooly bugger with authority.

Customer Service:
Be prepared to be insulted. When I sent the rod back the first time because it wouldn''t stay together when casting, the CS person explained oh so patiently how to assemble a fly rod. Useful inf

Summary:
The UFT864 is a very nice rod. I don't actually own one, but I cast our store's every Saturday when I teach our casting class. I usually prefer a faster rod, but for teaching and demonstrations it's excellent. I haven't found it to be a "line cannon", but it'll reach the fish. Fit and finish are fine (not excellent).
