G. Loomis GL3 - 8-9 wts

Description
This 9' 3-piece is a very affordable, very pleasing saltwater flats rod. It'll take on anything from bonefish to redfish to snook. And it's quite powerful, yet easy to load with a #8 line for most sit...

Summary:
I believe the rod was designed as a flats rod for bonefish and snook. It will pickup 30" and lay out 70" with ease. It has a very stiff butt attached to a correspondingly soft tip that also permits it to short cast well. But this is its achilles heel as the radical difference between butt and tip works against you with heavy flies and/or lots of lead on the leader. Not a big clouser rod. I would give this rod good marks for Great lakes steelhead and salmon.

Strengths:
Very good for a quick pickup and long cast in one motion. Short casts well.

Weaknesses:
Intolerant of large, heavy flies or a lot of lead on the leader.

Customer Service:
Quick service with no arguments.

Summary:
Like the other GL3 mega series, this is an excellent rod for the price. I use the 8/9 on northern like and smaller pacific salmon (anything less than kings). Should be great on the salt flats, but I haven't gotten there. Casts smoothly with large, bulky flies. I like it better for this than the faster tips, but that's my casting style (grew up with "fullflex" glass and bamboo).

Strengths:
Great rod for the money.

Weaknesses:
Not as good into wind as high-end faster rods.

Summary:
A good rod for the $$$. I'm not sure how it compares to the current crop of high end St Croix's however. I am content with it's action and the fact that it has such a great warranty for under $300.

Strengths:
Good backbone, low glare, quality components, great warranty.

Weaknesses:
The blank is a bit brittle. Have broken two since 1996.

Customer Service:
Excellent. Some people complain about Loomis but I've never had a problem. Even when they thought the rod wasn't to blame I was given the benefit of the doubt.
