Price Paid:  $450.00

Summary:
Believe me or not - its up to you. For $100 you could have a better reel than mine performed. As I said, the reel looked great "out of the box" - but once you get it wet, look out.

I'm done with Islander and bought a Tibor. Worlds of difference.

Strengths:
Recently purchased a Large Arbor 3.6 - a new model for Islander. Out of the box, the reel looked great. Nice finish, relatively smooth drag, etc.

Weaknesses:
I hate to disagree with the other reviewers on this board, but this reel has MAJOR problems. First, Islander seriously misstated the backing/line capacity of the reel. It holds much less than indicated. Second, this reel was absolutely worthless after getting it wet. The drag became very jerky and had terrible start up inertia. Then, the wood handle swelled (again due to water I would guess) and wouldn't rotate freely. After two attempts to lubricate the drag and handle, the reel continued to fail after immersion in water.
It is truly junk in my opinion.

Customer Service:
Not good. I basically informed them by e-mail of the problems I had and, since it was a brand new reel, whether they would allow the shop I bought it at to take it back in exchange for a different model.
Needless to say, my e-mails went unanswered for days and I finally had to call and Islander begrudgingly allowed me to return the reel.

Reviewed by: Anonymous User ,  50+ days a year , from Seaside Park, NJ

Body of Water:
Island Beach, NJ

Favorite State:
NJ

Summary:
This has to be the best reel (L.A 4.5) out there. It Blows all the others (especially Abel Super & Tibor) away. The 4.5 has a 1/2 larger diameter than the Riptide and weighs less, and has slightly better capacity. The Abels can't compare. The Super 11 is 3/4 of an inch less than the 4.5.and it's less expensive too!!!

Strengths:
Extremely light weight. Biggest diameter reel out there.

Weaknesses:
Need to keep the drag well lubed - need to check every few months.

Customer Service:
Never had to use them
