Reviewed by: schellhase ,  Backpacker

Price Paid:  $300.00 at REI

Summary:
I'm not a backpacker, I'm a cyclist but that wasn't a choice. The Etrex Vista is a very useful unit to have on your handlebars while cycling. It is easy to see where you are relative to your intended destination.

My major complaint is the accessory Mapsource MetroGuide USA software. The software really enhances the usefulness of the Vista by adding motels, restarants, gas stations, etc. However, the software quickly becomes out of date and there is no way to download updates on-line.

About once a year Garmin publishes a new version of the software and even with the $30 rebate for current users, the upgrade cost is in excess of $80. I think that is unreasonable and that Garmin should find someway to provide frequent upgrades to the data rather than issuing a new release of the software every year.

Customer Service:
They are great unless you complain about their products and then they can get surly.

Reviewed by: Tom ,  Mountaineer

Price Paid:  $70.00

Summary:
This software is great. The only thing missing is a way for it to tell me which turns to make. I just went on a weekend trip to a city if never been. I was able to see wher I was in relation to all the sights. When I was low on fuel (without ever seeing a gas station), it showed me the nearest stations and the relative direction.

Magellan Streets & Destinations - couldn't even show me what street I was on, yet alone where to find anything. I have no Idea what I spent the extra money on over the GPS only.
