at REI Summary: I spent nearly two months on the Therm-A-Rest Tandem when moving here from Washington State. I was car camping so I didn't have to heft it on my own. I was alone for the first month and only had to share with my two Malamutes. The space was great and made my tent feel like home. When my wife got here, it still didn't change the comfort. It put up with nights of wet floors, untrimmed Malamute paws, and the occasional romp with nary a problem. There are two major benefits to the tandem design. One is more efficient packing by getting two pads into one stuff sack. The other is they stay together. When my wife and I used seperate closed cell pads we would tend to end up on opposite sides of the tent with a dog in between. Or is we zipped the bags together, one of us tended to lose a pad at some point.
Bottom line: Don't be phased by the price or weight, remember, this is for TWO pads. Highly recommended over spereate pads if you enjoy being close to your hiking partner. Also, since it is so comfortable, it might convince a non-beliving significant other that camping isn't about walking all day and being uncomfortable at night.
