Katadyn Scout

Description
The Scout is both a filter and purifier. It kills or removes all bacteria, protozoa and viruses when water flows through its tri-iodine resin matrix. We recommend the addition of the Carbon Cartridge ...

Review Abstract
The bottom line for the PUR Scout is that it’s: “a small price to pay for peace of mind.” No reviewers report falling ill while using the PUR Scout during travels throughout the world. Most found the purifier “fit nicely in the backpack”, “holds up well”, and “puts out a large volume of water with every pump.” Also cited is the “exceptional water clarity.” Downside is the expensive filter replacements that caused one reviewer to note, “it almost makes sense to throw the whole filter away and get a new one rather than buy a replacement filter cartridge.”

Summary:
Excellent pump. I've used it for 5 years and it still works great and is clean. The fact you can get instant clean cold water makes worth the weight without question. I am wondering what is up with PUR therse days. I know they don't make this model anymore. Can the replacement cartidges still be found? I don't want to lose it when it finally goes. Please post if you have that info. I am fond of the 'pump' action and highly recommend it or something similar. Great value for a purifier.

Summary:
I really love this water filter. It's a really easy and conveinent pump. The Scout packs away easier than the MSRs or Sweetwaters. I love it. i take it everytime I go camoping, or hiking. Itr is so lightweight and so much cheaper than other water filters i have tried in the past!

Summary:
Great value at the price I paid. The BSA adventures I have participated in would have been nightmares without this compact and efficient purifier.
This Pur product needs to have a prescreen (coffee filter over the foot/emersed portion ) of the filter feeder as well as wait until impuities settle in the untreated water source in order to fully obtain long term effectiveness of the purifier.

Customer Service:
Outdoor outlet has always lived up to their promises and made good on returns and repairs.

Price Paid:  $69.00 at Gander Mtn

Summary:
This is my favorite purifier that I've used and probably the only type I'll buy from now on. I've used this one extensively since 1996 when I bought it for a School trip to Isle Royale(pretty much guaranteed critters in the water, inc hydatid tapeworm). The funny thing about this is that for a week long trip, our group had my scout and an Explorer for six people. On the third day, one of my buddies broke the explorer and we used the scout for the rest of the trip.

I do highly suggest the coffee filter trick, especially in dirtier water, and if there is really bad water(looks more like mud than water), try the following set up(requires extra stuff) Take a larger pill container, 350 ct ibuprofen bottles work well, drill many holes in it, and cover this with a larger coffee filter, as well as the intake filter, which goes inside, also covered with filters. you can then cover the top with something such as a baloon or some plastic.

Pur scout and Explorer are the only ones I've used. I like both of them, but find the explorer too heavy for myself and my wife. If I took a large group, I'd prefer multiple scouts rather than an explorer. (I'm a climber, scuba diver, and sky diver and we like redundancy)

This filter is great! I have used it as the only source of clean water for groups of 2 to 4 people, with no complaints. It is simple, durable, and fast. In short, It is one of the best values in my pack.
