Summary:
great bottle on the trail. it's great to be drinking water from the river while your friends are still pumping. i've actually had two over last 5 years-the main problem is the flimsy cap that's guaranteed to break off-but i've enjoyed it enough to get another.

Reviewed by: Evan Gifford ,  Day Hiker , from Durango CO US

Price Paid:  $35.00

Summary:
I have used this bottle/filter on quite a few trips, including through the Alakai swamps on Kauai. It seemed to be a sure bet for water filtration, as everyone that relied on this over the last two years (8 or so people) have not had problems. That is not to say, the water we were filtering was bad in the first place.

In a recent trip to Chicago Basin, near durango, I had quite a few problems that would make me think twice about buying any other Safe Water product (even though they are made in Durango!)

First of all, the plastic flip-top cover broke off ..

Not too big a deal, as long as you wipe the mouth piece dry and dis-infect.

Second, the primary filter came un-glued.

Obviously a major problem, especially 16 miles in, glad I brought iodine!

Good:

Very good design compared to Bota bottles, which I would not reccommend at all.

Drop in a few iodine tablets to kill-em-all and the filter takes out all iodine taste .. very nice.

BAD:

Flimsy flip-top construction .. what were they thinking?

Potential of leakage around primary filter or filter could break off!

I have not found a use for the Mesh bag .. could be used to attach water bottle to external frame pack?

Price Paid:  $40.00 at Sportmart

Summary:
Really pleased with this bottle. Beats having to use and carry the pump. Took it for a week to the Trinity Alps and had no problems. It was nice to not have to carry a full water bottle, since water sources were usually available. The only draw back is the mesh bag, the bottle is a hassle to remove and put back, also it doesn't "hang good". It needs a clip attached. Getting a good gulp by sqeezing the bottle was possible, another type we had you couln't with the small nozzle it had.

Reviewed by: Kelly ,  Backpacker , from Pennsylvania

Summary:
I love this bottle. I've had it for about a year, and wish I could have found one several years ago. It might have saved me from amoebas and other critters. It's great to be able to dip into a stream and chug immediately, without messing with hoses and gadgets. The filter adds almost no additional weight and bulk to my pack, since I'd need to be carrying bottles anyway. Water sometimes leaks out of the bottom, especially if the cloth pre-filter is on.

Customer Service:
Part of the cap was broken when I bought it, and the company immediately sent me another.
