Summary:
Bombproof shoes. The addition of Traverse Trac rails, and Atlas's decision to dump aluminum crampons for stronger, thinner steel crampons provide unsurpassed, secure traction on all but the hardest, steepest ice (no shoe is a substitute for 10/12 point crampons when conditions warrant).

Heavier weight (compared to previous years' 1033s) is compensated for with increased tail drag (less overall spring in the binding). Less weight is lifted with each step as a result, but when necessary, the spring-loaded binding allows the user to easily lift the entire shoe up and out of the snow for maximum maneuverability.

Bindings are easy to adjust even with (most) gloves on. Bindings occassionally need readjusting once your boot "settles in", but once the bindings are dialed in, the fit and control is superb, with little lateral movement.

The 12-series bindings definitely require a stiffer boot to avoid pressure points. Be warned, these bindings don't flex much. For best fit, neither should your boots.

Bottom line: If you are looking for a shoe that can handle everything you can throw at it, desire maximum control, prefer the ease of a rachet binding and don't mind wearing a stiffer boot, the 12 series is a great choice. If you prefer a softer boot and more forgiving binding, then check out the 10 series.
