$0.00 Summary: If you want to keep dry, buy this jacket…and an umbrella and two cans of Scotch Guard (old recipe). This jacket will not keep the rain out. Last week, I walked 45 mins. to work in a moderate rain and was soaked. Later, under no illusion but having nothing else, I hiked Ben Nevis in the rain and needless to say, I was wet. I guess that’s why they call it the precip—because you can feel the rain right on your skin as if you were wearing nothing t all.

at REI Summary: I purchased a Precip jacket at REI for my son to wear at Philmont. He didn't test the jacket in rain before taking it to Philmont. Big mistake. It rained daily and the first time he wore it the rain soaked through instantly. He got wetter wearing the jacket than if he went without. Another man backpacking with us had the same jacket and had the same problem. He had worn his precip jacket one other time before coming to Philmont and it didn't keep him dry then either. He called Marmot and they said that the jacket rainproof coating must not have been activated. He was instructed by customer service to put the jacket in the dryer. Supposedly the heat from the dryer would activate the waterproof lining. After doing this at home he tested the jacket and he said it seemed to be repelling water so he brought it to Philmont. Turns out the the jacket didn't repel the rain instead soacked it up.
Do not trust Marmot Precip jackets for keeping you dry even in a light rain.
By the way, I have a Marmot rain jacket and it worked great at Philmont. It is not a Precip jacket...not sure what line it is as the tag doesn't say.

at REI Summary: I agree with many of the reviews on here - this jacket is not waterproof. I bought it originally for a trip to Costa Rica, but luckily did not see much rain. But then I took it out during a downpour in Chicago and got soaked. This was my third Marmot product and probably my last, as all three did not live up to my expectations, especially when compared to other brands out there.

$0.00 Summary: This jacket is NOT WATERPROOF, I am a park ranger in Tennessee and this jacket was issued as an uniform item. I was using the jacket one day on boat patrol and got soaked in a heavy rain. I am back to using an old gortex jacket we received years back.

$0.00 Summary: Lightweight and works great!
I bought this lightweight shell to stay dry on an upcoming month-long hike and have been taking every opportunity to test it since it arrived on my doorstep. Weather has been rainy the past few weeks in Chicago and I've gotten the chance to see how this great jacket works in light rain as well as an awful downpour. I was surprised that even in the worst weather, it kept me completely dry with no leak-through. It also layers well with my Marmot fleece for good wind protection and warmth. The feature I enjoy most on this jacket is the roll-up hood. I don't like walking around in a hooded jacket when I'm not wearing the hood and having the ability to essentially turn this into a jacket without a hood when I'm not using it gives it extra points. When I do need the hood, I don't even have to remove the jacket to unroll it - Accessibly velcro strap is reachable while I still have the jacket on! Great buy at the price!
