Backpacker Summary: A great line for my Lami 7.6ft 4-wt fiberglas fly rod. I have a double taper 5wt. and it loads the rod very nicely. It remaines supple in the cold, and performs reasonably well in warmwater fishing for small bass and bluegill. It does everything I need it to do and more. My line is going on six years and shows little wear. Coul not be more pleased! Customer Service: Nut needed thus far. Similar Products Used: Rio, S.A., and Wulff TT.

, from New Zealand Summary: This line is now in it's fourth season of use. A large part of that has been in water with pumice grit, which is v hard on lines. It has handled this with no cracking visible as yet, and still shoots well. I agree with other reviewers that it is a little stiffer than some brands, but it doesn't have a wicked memory, and does seem to mend well on fast water. Customer Service: Not needed, but they have exc. rep. here Similar Products Used: S/A , Shakspear, Airflo.

, from Katrineholm, Sweden Summary: Min absoluta favoritlina! , from Encino, Ca. Summary: The Cortland 444sl series of lines do tend to be very stiff, and in some applications this could be an advantage and in others a disadvantage. The line I used was a WF5 which casted very well to distance. The most useful aspect of having a stiff line was its superb mendability. This was the easiest mending line, especially with a heap of line out, that I have fished. Additionally, the stiffness allowed the line to remain tangle free under my feet and seemed to enhance the shootability of the line.
One drawback to using this stiff line was when casting delicately to spooky fish in close quarters. I found it difficult to cast this WF without a little slap on the water when compared to more pliant lines like Scientific Anglers’s GPX or XPS.
Another issue is the reputation this line has acquired for the coating to crack which leads to many troubles including hinging while casting and mending, water saturation which leads to sinking, and overall deterioration. My particular line did not do this after 2 years of fishing. I was told Cortland fixed the problem and that if this did happen one could send their line back to Cortland for a replacement.
Overall I would recommend this line for distance casters with stiff, fast action rods. I can cast farther and mend more efficiently with this line out of the box better than any other I have tried so far, and most importantly it doesn’t form that man sized spider web under your feet.
