Backpacker Summary: The Battenkill 3/4 is my go-to reel for most of my fishing. It shows the wear of hard use, but has withstood some fairly rough handling. I've never landed anything larger than 20 inches, but did so in some heavy water with this reel. Maintenance is easy and spools are light enough to carry a couple of extras on long hikes. If I had to criticize one element, it would be that the drag setting seems to loosen over time despite regular attempts to tighten - just isn't engineered to be tightened. Perhaps I need to replace worn elements on the drag to tighten it up. Anyway, I like this reel, and am disappointed that it has been discontinued (or will be). I'm going to buy another reel body so I have a backup, and have at least one to pass on to my kid. Customer Service: I've never had a problem, but haven't had to use CS with regard to this reel. Snowboarder Summary: I purchased one of these reels because, hey it's ORVIS so I wrongly thought it must be good. Right? Wrong, this was the biggest hunk of junk I've ever owned and when I was young and poor I fished with some real junk. This reel was worse then one I'd bought for $20. It had a balance or other mechanical flaw which let the fly line slip the spool and I'd find it outside the reel guides at the worst times. The only way to right the situation was to take the spool off. Customer Service: Horrible. I say this only because I sent it to ORVIS once hoping they'd fix it or send me one that didn't have this problem. They sent it back without doing anything to it and basically told me it was the way I fished. So, I thought they're the experts they must know something I don't and my technique must really stink even though I've been fly fishing since I was 11 and am now 32. Yeah, well the next time out the reel had the same problems as the first time. ORVIS just didn't want to admit there was a major design flaw with the reel. I sent it back and they gave me my money back which is the only good thing I have to say about ORIFICE. I went and bought a Cimarron and I've never had a problem with it - not one! I guess my technique improved.
