Ok, this is my two year review. I bought this stove as a replacement for a Primus Himilaya dual fuel. While I was happy with my Primus, I received a Powermax lantern as a gift for car-camping with the kids. I simply wanted to check it out as I wanted to use one fuel source. So far, I've been EXTREMELY happy with my stove. I've used it car-camping with the kids as well as solo backpacking in the 8k ft range. It's small, lightweight, and really packs a punch. It's safe to say I like this much better than my Primus stove. I cannot talk about how much I like the powermax fuel system. It's simple, efficient, and very easy to use their products. Burn time all out is about 60 mins on the bigger 300g cartridge and it boils a liter of water in a little over 3 mins. I've found one cartridge is plenty for the two-night quick meals and lantern usage. I haven't had the opportunity to take it out on the week long trek's anymore (kids) but the packability and "green key" ability to smash it and pack it out are great. Disadvantages? 1) Its loud when at it's highest setting. (No big deal though) 2) Acquisition of fuel cylinders might be a problem in your area. 3) Cost per cartridge compared to some of the other fuel sources. Other than that no biggie. My local Oshmans sporting goods carries them. REI has them as well for shipping. Overall, I am very suprised that this type of fuel has not taken the world by storm. Backpacker rated it a Editors Choice in '97. They were right!

Customer Service

Coleman's kindof like General Motors of the outdoor world. Some products are like the Corvette and Cadillac. Some are like the Geo. However, this product is every bit the quality as any of the best stoves on the market. Limited lifetime warranty and sturdy construction in such a lightweight package.

Similar Products Used:

Primus Himilaya dual fuel Pocket Rocket. (Kindof cool, I used to use it for my ultra-lightweight overnighters but this coleman is worth the additional ounces...it cooks better and there's a saving in fuel.)

I''ve been using the XTREME for 3 years now. I have tested it to 10,000 feet and below freezing with no problems. Heats water quickly and the adjustable flame is really nice. No liquid fuel to deal with and the aluminum cartridges smash down for packing out and can be recycled.

Customer Service

The first one that I bought failed on my first trip out with it. I was not a happy camper. I sent it to Coleman for repair and they sent me a new one within 2 weeks. I also bought a repair kit just so

Used this stove on a 8 day Algonquin canoe trip, worked great never failed. We had 6 guys and used 2 and a half 300g power cells the whole trip, fire ban was in effect so all water for meaks was heater on this. The power cells can be punctured with a tool provided and crushed when empty, great for packing out. Used it twice in cold weather below 30 degrees f had problems lighting untill we heated the tube, fire paste helps. Coleman also makes a lantren that is charged with the same fuel cell. light output probably 15 watt light.
