Just got back from a lond weekend with this tent. It is a wonderful tent. Easy to set up and break down and great quality. Well thought out design. In the morning with the fly/rain cover on in direct sun it gets too hot to sleep (I didn't have a choice of spots or shade to set up in). I Highly recoment this tent. Also as a side note I just bought a Therma-rest Trail-Lite sleeping pad, that thing is amazingly comfortable to sleep on.

I love this tent. I bought it two years ago and never had a problem with it during extended rafting/canoeing trips. It's main quality: it is extremely fast and easy to sent it up - quality that I really appreciated during rainy days. It offers plenty of room for two people and gear, and in spite of a few strong storms it always kept me and my gear dry. Cons: it is a little bit heavy for a backpacking trip. But for a river trip I found it PERFECT!

i am stealing this tent from my father, its worth its weight in gold. i recently returned from a weeklong trip, and it started raining while we were in the parking lot. The ride home was when it stopped. 6 days of nonstop rain, and i never had to worry about getting cold or wet, i knew that i would be ok. when one of the girls with us was starting to go hypothermic on me, i knew that i could set up my tent in a matter of seconds, and it would be dry. granted this tent is cramped and small, but with two people in it that are experienced, its plenty of room. the vestibles are great because i always leave the door open, even in a down pour. i always stay dry too. this affords me great ventilation and a place to put things like waterbottles and boots, so i can get them in the night. a rope strung across the top area a couple of times makes a great drying rack too. all in all, i have never had a tent that as much a joy to use, and im taking it from my dad, he doesnt use it anymore :)

I have the 4XT, so I'm assuming the 2XT is just the smaller version. The 4XT is awesome! Pros: two doors, two good-sized vestibules, spacious (as with all tents, the rating is high - I wouldn't stick 4 people in there but you could), good fly coverage, good ventilation (but average "stuffiness" with the fly on), if backpacking, it breaks down well between 2-3-4 people. Made it through sleet and heavy rain without a hitch. Cons: heavy (but worth it!), replace the stakes with lighter ones to save some weight if backpacking. If car camping, this is the perfect 2-3 person tent! You should always, always seal the seams on your tent, no matter what make or model!

I have the 4 person version purchased 4 years ago. I just got back from the boundary waters and it was my experience there that motivated me to write a review.

This tent has now been on about 6 lengthy canoe trips of greater than five days and has been subjected to considerable variations in weather. Most recently, the tent withstood 3 solid days of rain with one major storm that had 40 mph wind gusts, 6 inches of rain and hail. The tent came through with flying colors. It did not leak and
protected us greatly from the storms.

This is a roomy tent with about 60 sq ft of room, excluding the vestibule. There is one on each side and they are great for storing gear.

This is a great tent and I have few complaints. My model, which is older, has the problem of dripping in rain through the door after a rain storm if one is not careful.

Other than this concern, I can highly recommend the tent. I have not had any problem yet with stichting or zippers.

I have the new version of this tent, with one door, called the "Rainier". It has the same floor dimensions (5'x7'6") and aluminum poles. You cannot get a better tent for the money. It weighs in at 4 lbs, 12 oz, has a full fly w/ one huge vestibule and one small one on the other side (there's a zippable small window where the other door was). Although I have not had it in high-wind areas, I have had it in hard rain and it worked perfectly. The new poles are very small (14 inches) and very light. It fits perfectly into my pack and at under 5 lbs, you can't beat it. For a tent for one person and all your gear, or two people...it's perfect. It had a retail of $150 and I got it on sale for $104..can't beat that.

Similar Products Used:

North Face (their new aluminum pole insert design is bad...if you get any debris in it, it's made so tight that you can't get the poles attached to the corners), Winnebago (old tent...lasted 15 years), REI Camp Dome 6 (another excellent tent for light weather use)

I purchased a Mountain Pass 4 XT back in 1999.

THE GOOD

1) This tent is so spacious you feel guilty when you see fellow backpackers squished into much smaller tents that weight the same.

Tremedous amounts of open space are available and yet Eureaka made sure to design in a decent height profile. This tent will withstand 50 mph+ winds with no problems.

The vestible space is enormous. My wife, me, and my three kids (3, 6, and 11 years old) easily fit inside. Although if everyone had a large backpack, it might be tight for 5-people.

2) It has terrific (and adjustable) venilation. This tent really shields out the bad weather and doesn't have "falling dew" problem I've seen with other tents. Condensation pours down the inside surface of the fly when the weather is cold and your frozen breath begins to melt in the morning sun. The profile of the fly prevents moisture from falling straight down into the mesh at the top of the tent.

3) Very water proof, we sat through a 4-hour rain storm in North Cascade Park near Washington, Pass. This tent held it's ground with no leaks...period!

4) The best part of all, this tent is very light for it's size. It seems that this tent has picked up some weight since 1999. You may want to check into this further.

My 4-man tent weighs less than a 2-man Sierra Design Meteor Light tent that I've just bought (2001 model), which weighs 10 lbs, but is advertised as weighing much less.

5) This tent is of very HIGH quality and has nice workmanship.

THE BAD

1) Really, can't think of anything bad! Now that's strange, I usually always have some type of critique for everything!

You might want to check the color before you buy, one year the tents were orange (which is okay if you like orange, I don't).

By the way I don't know anyone working at Eureka and I'm not being endorsed in anyway from Eureka. This is just one damn good tent! The design team at Eureka did a bang-up job on this model. I hope they never discontinue it.

Don't take my word for it, GO CHECK IT OUT YOURSELF, you'll be suprised. Why this tent doesn't have a HIGHER rating is beyond me. If you pay attention to detail you'll really appreciate this model.

Customer Service

Excellent customer service from Eureka, I ordered some accessories by phone.

Awesome tent. It's the only tent I own and I use it for everything, and it takes it all. I've slept out in gale force blizzards and been fine. only complaint; the fly is nylon so if not properly set up it sags when wet. Great value, mine is four years old and still waterproof.

Bought the Eureka MP XT 2 about 3 years ago in preparation to a trip to Brazil that did not happen. I've been using it for backpacking all over the US and in Europe and it has been holding out very well. I think I set it up and tore it down at least 60-70 times so far, and spent many more nights in it. I like the light weight, waterproofness and versatility. It makes a huge 1 person tent and more than adequante 2 person tent. On warm nights the ventilation is not the greatest if you keep the vestibules closed. I waterproofed the rainfly and added a ground sheet to the stuff sack. Luckily, the stuff sack was large enough to accomodate the extra bulk.
