an ok all around shoe that really isn't great at anything in particular. The cushioning is good if you fall on your heels sport climbing or bouldering w/o a pad. I went 2 sizes down from my street shoe size. I would NOT spend the money for these again...it is definitely not worth the money. there are shoes that perform just as well for nearly half the money....check out bufos or climbingshoes.com I would recommend this shoe for people who boulder a lot Without a pad. If you're looking for a technical shoe, go with something else.

I already had a ton of shoes, but I got a deal on these, I'll make it quick and painless: The Good: Comfy as all get out Padded heel Smears well Slipper comfort Padded "tongue" and lining Stealth Rubber The Bad: Cannot heel hook for @%@$!!! Durability on early models. I have some from the first year they came out, and I am busting a seam and ripping the velcro straps. Velcro + hard crax = bad mix The Verdict: If you frequent long face route, this is the shoe you want. Boulderers and trad-daddies (and mamas) look elsewhere. They would be perfect for El Potrero Chico or Flatironing.

THESE SHOES ARE SWEET!!!!! I have used and abused them constantly, but you would never know. They are extremely strudy, and can put up with anything that you can throw at them. I will agree with the other review that talks about them being not especially great at one thing particularly, but good at everything. I tought climbing in the mountains last summer and these puppies were my savior. That is because, half a day on the rock would normally lead to swollen feet and blisters. However, these things are like wearing socks. NO SORE FEET!!!!! What are you waiting for? Get a pair right now, and you wont be sorry!

This shoe truly fits the "Jack of all trades" category. It is neither a high performance sport shoe, nor a clunky all-day boot. If you want a shoe that will do everything well, but nothing great, then this may be a good shoe for you. The velcro closure has given me some concerns with a lack of support. After a full day of climbing cracks, very thin face, and wicked stemming routes I would say that these shoes are not great for any of those categories. I wear them with slightly curled toes for power which makes them a little uncomfortable for cracks. Hard stemming and thin face climbing was where I had more serious performance concerns. The shoes tended to "roll" around my foot a bit more than I would like. I was unable to get the firm support out of the velcro closure, no matter how firmly I cinched them, that I would like for those types of climbs. However, in the gym or climbing face routes/bouldering under 5.11/v2-3 these are quite comfortable and offer solid performance. They were designed to be a good all-around shoe and that''s exactly what they are.

I'm a huge suspect when it comes to claims about "all around' ability. If something claims to be an all around performer, it generally is just sufficient at a few things and not great at any. Not true with the Ascent. The rubber is top notch - without question. The fit is tremendous - especially if you don't like the contortion rockshoes that bend your feet when you wear them. My second toe is longer than my big toe, and these are one of the few shoes that I can wear for more than three routes. Oh, and if you're wondering about the funky heel - it's a lot neater than it looks. Now that I've worn out two pairs of Ascents, I wonder what rockshoes are like without EVA foam for support and comfort.

Excellent shoes. The Five Ten rubber is great and the velcro closure is a godsend for people who like to loosen up the kicks after a climb.

The padded heel is nice for walking or for drops off of boulders.

They do seem to stretch a lot so get them tight and then go a bit smaller. It hurts at first but then they get pretty comfortable.

I'd say these shoes are good for beginners all the way up to at least 5.11. Maybe further. But I wouldn't know.
