Got it on reioutlet closeout, best deal i ever saw! Catch it soon if your lucky! Great jacket, the 3 layer Gor-tex XCR and micro welded seams keep everything dry. Not as stiff as other 3 layer gor-tex jackets tried, but some is expected. Will keep you dry in 99% of the weather you encounter! Down side is the inside pockets make it a little bulky and awkward. Overall this is the best jacket of it's kind that i have ever tried!

The Marmot Alpiniste III

This is a popular and well repected jacket, however its design is dated. It is simply too "bomb proof." It has so much material and so many pockets up front its actually near impossible to see your feet. I do not feel the wind skirt is necessary, The collar of the hood rises too high and once again blocks the view of your footing. On tricky terrain I find myself constantly struggling with the hood in order to see the rocks below. I would rather be wet than dead from a fall.

This coat is also heavy and does not really vent well. Bottomline: An inflexible and too "bomb-proof." This is a classic example of "more is less." Reliable, high-quality, and it will never let you down. But heavy, uncomfortable, baggy, and simply not the modern way to go in design. Arcteryx has got it right. Light and fast.

Customer Service

Marmot has good customer service but they have a tendency to reject claims for valid warranty work. "Lifetime warranty" does not apply here.

This is truly one of the best 3-ply gore-tex parkas on the market. It tends to be on the heavy side compared to the arcteryx jackets, but I think of the extra weight as extra durability. Have used it ice climbing in the catskills, and as a nice winter backpacking parka. The hood and and collar design is nice for those torrential downpours and whiteout conditions. You can cinch down the hood to the point only your eyes are exposed to the elements. Marmot makes some of the best mountaineering clothing out there. I would stay away from some of the new north face stuff that is being marketed towards college kids, but they still make some good expedition gear. Mountain hardwear, arcteryx, moonstone, patagonia, and cloudveil also make good gear. I can't complain about the price because i got it nearly 50% off. I also have the alpinist 3-ply bibs, and they are just as bomber as the parka.

P.S. The new marmot line came out this winter, and they radically changed the design of this parka. I'll have to ask around to see how well it performs. It appears to fit more like the arcteryx line.

This jacket is truely the best out there! I am going to have this for a long time. Snow skirt is sweet, hood is awesome. Nothing can penetrate the 3-layer Goretex. Highly Recommended.

I really love my Alpinist Jacket. This thing has a million pockets and a ton of design features. I would reccomend this jacket to any one who spends time in the backcountry. Don't worry about the price, you get what you pay for with this jacket.

North Face mountain guide jacket, Doesn't even compare!!

The Alpinist III is a wonderful jacket for many reasons. It's durable, lots of reinforcement patches, great pockets and super windproof. For people with long arms, the sleeves are long enough! I think the hood could be larger, however. I find that when you put the hood over a helmet, there's not enough neck mobility. And if you have the front zipper all the way up, it would be nice if there was a little more flece protection against your face because the zipper can get mighty cold against your chin. Also, for the price, Marmot could put nice zipper pulls all around, instead of just on the front zip and two outside pockets. How about a stuff sack, too?!

This is the best jacket I've owned. It fits me well, more specifically the jacket is built to move with me. This is usually a problem because I am long at the torso, narrow waisted, broad of shoulders and long of arms. This coat is engineered for a person to work in comfortably.
It resists the abrasion of skiing back-country like a suit of armor. Downhill through the trees with no evidence to the shell at all, not a scratch. The jacket is engineered to be worn under a Backpack, the pockets are all accessible. This shell is highly reccomended.

I love this jacket; lightweight, good pockets, and can take a beating. The little bit of DriClime that protects your lips from a frozen zipper is quite a happy thing as well. But it doesn't come in women's sizes yet.

For climbing - the best jacket on the market. My only complain - collar/chin could have used more of the fleece padding - as in Alpinist Parka, for example - when fully buttoned up it is not comfortable.
I have used it for technical climbing under rain, snow and wind, for hiking, skiing, casual use. Very, very well made, bomber quality. Highly recommended.

KICK ASS JACKET. i have had it 2-3 years now and had no problems. i have ice climbed, skiied, and rock climbed in this and it goes through everything i can do to it. i also use it for ski patrol and fire fighting for the U.S. forest service. by far one of the top 2-3 jackets on the market.
