Atomic SX:B5 All Mountain

Atomic’s SX:B5 Alpine Ski is the first ski to utilize Atomic’s incredible Beta 5 system. I have a tendancy to throw my weight around, and be over agressive when I ski. As a result, many skis can't handle this reckless style. The SX:B5 can. It is a tank. Cuts through anything, and holds almost as well as a race ski on ice. Many belive Atomic's have a "locked turn radius." Not these. You just need to be a bit agressive with them. The first time I took them out, I thought something was wrong. I couldn't feel the snow. What I wasn't feelling were all the little bumps in the snow or any chatter when the skis were "washed" out of a turn. After a few runs I was used to this, and now look for simillar dampness in future ski purchases. Some complain about the weight, the only time I noticed it was to and from the car. They have enough rebound to compensate for any of the extra weight on the snow. Look for deals on older models. Atomic keeps changing the graphics, but as far as I can tell not the ski itself.

Good For: Those who want a super damp, super stable, super fast, all condition (on piste), ski.

Not Good for: Those who like lively, light skis. Those who can't bend a stiff ski, or begginners/low intermediates.

I skied the sx:b5 at an Atomid demo day at my mountain and it was love and first run. The ski felt as if it was on a railroad track. It cut the crud as it it was a razor. I was still able to turn it without a problem. Unlike other Atomic skis this one felt heavy underfoot but it still handled and if you like speed, this is the ski you want to be on. Right now I am looking for an end of the ski sale. My present ski is a Volkl 5 star.

What a ski. Solid at speed, the most solid ski I have ever skied. Blazes through any condition, holds on any skied off, icy, crappy patch. I had demo'd the B5 in NY during one of those days that go from corn/crunchy stuff, to a warm 45 degree decent conditions, to slush, and back to ice. Hands down the best skis I tried. I had tried the Rossi B1 Bandit (didn't like it so much) - the Sx:11 (great ski - just a little too light for me) - and the B5. Only drawback of the B5 is how heavy they are. Very Very Very heavy. You will notice how heavy they are, but I still made it through the moguls on them (East Coast death cookies). 5 Stars.
