Volant Chubb Powder Review

Volant Chubb

Description
Skiing magazine has dubbed the Chubb "...the winner and new champion among all the fatties." We couldn't have said it better. So, we'll just second the judges' emotions by saying nothing floats as effortlessly through the powder as the Chubb. sizes: 170/180/190 cm

1999

Summary:
Bought these fat heavy skis cheap for my wife (Chubb Genisis 2). Tried them myself and now my son and I fight over them. Best snow day ski I have skied on. Great in pow, greater in junk moguls. Cuts up death cookies like butter. Like old straight chubbs but also ok ski in hard pack.

Summary:
Best. Ski. Ever.
Bought these circa Y2K for powder (and to replace another pair that were stolen that I owned since '97/'98?) but over the years have found them more than capable for all conditions and terrain.
This pair is 190cm and I am 5'10 170#, 44 years old.
I can just blaze on the groomers and carve long, effortless turns with these skis.
If you are looking at these skis, or can even find them anymore, you likely know their rep for powder and crud; they float like absolute magic in the deep stuff and bust through crud nonchalantly.
If the ice is so bad to ski on, with these skis, then there are probably better things to do with your time. Or else work on your technique.
Bring strong legs though, because these babies are heavy. A foot rest on the chair's safety bar is a nice.
I have ski'd on a ton of skis in my life and the Chubbs have made me forget all of them.

Summary:
Thought I'd add a rewview on these as they are hitting the used market. These skiis tear up the mountain in pretty much any condition. They float effortlessly in the deepest powder and turn quick enough to get into some thick tree-skiing. On the crud and groomed they will fly with the best of them. I'm able to keep up turn for turn with the guys on the 'race skiis' on the groomed stuff. ...however being a fat ski they are not the most natural on the groomed and bounce too much to be used on the hard-packed ice.

Mine (along with three others that I know of) have started to delaminate. I caught mine just in time and used some metal epoxy to stop the torture, however they will probably not see much mountain time anymore...just saved for the big powder days.

Summary:
After a few years on PowerKarves I decided to get some 180 Chubbs as powder skis. These have now become the only skis I use. No matter what the condition the Chubbs handle it all. Powder, chowder, crud, moguls, trees, steeps they are all a breeze. The Chubbs width, soft tips, medium-stiff narrow tail make them versatile and super stable. Chubbs rip!
