My Moonstone Sauvage is vintage 1999, made in USA. Great design, excellent materials, and this thing is tough. Got it three years ago on E-Bay from an urban mountaineer in NYC, and on arrival found the parka to be totally impregated with cigarette smoke. I washed it about a dozen times. This had no effect, so I left it hanging outside for 3-4 months. All the rain and snow stripped off the DWR, but the cigarette stench went with it. And the parka did not fall apart or delaminate. In fact, with some occasional DWR respraying, it has been in almost daily service for three years since. One of the velcro wrist closures has just come unstitched, but that's it.

Customer Service

The late, great Moonstone Mountaineering Co. that made this parka is not the Moonstone that exists today. So I am not surprised that the current Moonstone is unresponsive to complaints about older products.

I first bought this jacket at the end of 1999, I bought it because I thought MS were pretty cool and I didn't want to buy the big brand names, it was an american product, it had a very comfortable tailored fitted feel unlike most other gortex jackets plus it had some features like the pocket system that was very good. After about six months the laminate started to seperate at the back of the hood, I also began to notice the shoulder/hood seem is quite uncomfortable/tight and I'm no bodybuiler. I also noticed the waterproofing went quiet quickly, Not to be put off I bought another one for my wife, the same problems occured, laminate (gortex layers seperating at the hood, waterproofing going after about 3 months. I've had these problems before with my previous gortex jacket (Mountain Range), so right now I'm very hesitant to ever buy gortex again. The irony is I used to work for the ad agency that just did gortex's recent campaign and my ex collegue's have visited there factory in Scotland and told me they are very proud of their product and I should send them back....and I have ...read on!

Customer Service

I emailed them and gave them a long explanation of the problems I have had with their two gortex jackets and the previous one I owned. All I got back was a tel. no. for Gortex and told to call them. I visited gortex's web site and they say return it to the shop which I did and currently I am waiting for a response for nearly two months now. The chapter is not over yet but so far I'm not impressed and am determined to make this company live up to it's fancy brochures and promises of service.

a very good shell for backpacking, trekking and mountaineering. absolutely waterproof, the hood is perfectly adjustable, sealed zippers, reinforced shoulders, large pockets that are not blocked when wearing a backpack... everthing you'd expect from a decent gore-shell. i wouldn' have bought it at the suggested reteil price though...

I got a new 2001 sauvage on ebay thus avoiding the 400.00 dollar retail price. No Gore-tex jacket is worth 400.00! Here's the deal, this is a superbe example of XCR construction. This thing breathes wonderfully (something that Moonstone jackets have always excelled at). Although the jacket does not have reinforced areas, it wears very well and weighs just under 2 lbs. Really the best jacket I've used in over 20 years of mountain guiding and ski-touring.

I bought this jacket the day after New Years in AL at 40% off of $410. It was a bargain. I do a bit of it all. I have worn this jacket in the summer in downpours in the deep south, in the UP of MI in a blizzard, snowboarding, snowshoeing....and this jacket is bombproof. I have had some minor breakdowns in velcro on the chest area, and my zipper pen's coating is gone, but I have used this jacket very hard and I anticipate using it for a long, long time. Kudos on the pockets; hell I didnt but a paclight jacket. The sealing of the jacket is great. I have only had to redo the DWR once in 3 years under heavy usage. By the way, mine WAS made in the USA. I also own the Momentum pants. They too are beefy and bomb proof. I will buy Moonstone again.

Customer Service

I called CS about the issues above; I received a RSP without question; however, after hearing some of the horror stories from some of the other reviewers, I am not sure I want to trust my baby to Rainy Pass. Anyone with some positive insght?

Never again! At first loved the jacket. Then the back upper panel started to leak on a backpacking trip in the Canadien Rockies. Sent it back. They claimed the DWR had worn off and wouldn't replace it. Sent it to Gortex who said that Moonstone should replace it. New jacket I received was heavier then the previous model. Just sold it and will probably buy a Arcteryx.

I have had this jacket for about 6 months because my marmot jacket was stolen. The MS has an obvious quality advantage over the marmot. (sorry, forgot exactly what marmot model. list about 400) I am entirely pleased, although Im a bit leary about customer support, should I need it. (hopefully never, the way this jacket is built!!!!!

Nice jacket, at first!

Customer Service

Now the zipper has broken and when I called Moonstone they told me to send to some other place, at MY expense!! I sent it and they told me it would be 7 - 8 weeks before they were able to get to it!!! Asked for a replacement and they told me they didn't have any. When I asked for a refund, they refused. Doesn't seem right. No wonder they went out of buisness before!

I do love the jacket but the hassle I went through with Moonstone isn't worth the time nor trouble. I bought this jacket for winter activites like skiing and packing only to not have it for the time I needed it most. it was only after I ripped them on-line that I recieved the below e-mail from Moonstone. Don't tell me I didn't try!

Customer Service

Ugh!! Thanks for your e-mail and feedback. I have talked with Renee and I understand that we botched a repair job on your jacket. I would be extremely frustrated and angry myself and I sincerely apologize for any lack of concern we at Moonstone may have showed you. It is my understanding that our repair facility, Rainy Pass Repair, has replaced a waterproof zipper with a non-waterproof zipper. Is that correct? What a nightmare! They have been doing our repairs for years and certainly know better than that. Moonstone excepts full responsibility for their mistake and would like to rectify the situation with you. Please give me a call at 800-390-3312 x-232 and I would be happy to discuss our options and listen to any further concerns.
Best regards,

I had to vote again to try and make up for the recent low scores posted. I don't know what happened with their gear but mine has excelled in all conditions. I think the gear has drastically improved since '95 and the other guy could've solved his problem by sending the jacket straight to Moonstone.
