Patagonia Stretch Triolet Jacket Shell Jackets

Patagonia Stretch Triolet Jacket Shell Jackets

DESCRIPTION

Stretch Triolet gear has what it takes for nimble, fast alpine climbing: waterproof/breathable stretch fabric, stormproof detailing and a clean, clutter-free profile. This season we've softened the chin area and repositioned the pockets to serve as handwarmers.

I used this jacket for five years, pretty extensively both backpacking and mountaineering in the California Sierra. The exterior fabric held up great and the fit was excellent. It was always waterproof though I did give it a couple of DWR treatments over the years when it started to wet out. Unfortunately, about a month ago, the jacket started to delaminate in spots. To Patagonia's credit and staying true to the guarantee, they credited me the full price paid for the jacket. I have now purchased a Microburst as a replacement and hopefully, it will wear as well as the triolet without the delamination. This company makes great products and stands by them.

i have been using this jacket for around two years now. I have found it great in all conditions, and seem to have avoided the waterproofing problems other have experienced. similarly, i have found that the fit is great -i'm 6'5", with long arms, and have had no problems. Perhaps the best part of this jacket is the durability of the fabric. it has survived several gritstone encounters in january and february and comes away without a scratch. The only problem i have found is with the fit of the hood, which is great over a helmet, but not much cop without one. The drawcord adjestment doesn't give nearly enough control, while many other jackets have a second drawcord running around the peak of the hood, which seem to work quite well.

To be honest, I haven''t been too happy with this jacket. The DWR seems to be pretty seriously lacking (in my opinion, a rain jacket should never have to "dry out;" the facing material was often soaked). I haven''t had any actual leaks, but I often end up damp from lack of breathability. Futhermore, those stretch panels simply don''t stretch (I didn''t really care when I bought it).t

I have this jacket for about a year, and so far I'm statisfied with it. It is waterproof for sure. I used it for about a week in the Alps, having a lot of rain and it kept me dry. It's possible that the material used by Patagonia doesn't breathe as well as gore-tex but I easily managed to ventilate my upperbody with the large zippers under the arms.
I also used this jacket a lot during rock climbing and so far I couldn't find any traces of this abuse. So I think this jacket is also very abrasion resistant.
However, I'm not very impressed with the stretch-panels. They don't give a lot of stretch according to my opinion and I'm lucky the sleeves are long enough for my arms. I can image this is a problem for some people.

Unfortunately, I wasn't as happy with it as the other people here. My Stretch Triolet soaked up water water like a sponge from day one, making it clear that H2No does not breathe as well as Gore-Tex (or a least, in my experience). After two hours of Scottish winter rain, the jacket was soaked on the inside, somthing that has never happened to in Gore-Tex .
Also, I found that water collects at the front of the hood, over a non-sealed seam.

Last, I wasn't to impressed with the stretchiness of the stretch pannels, making the arms a little short for my taste.

I own a lot of other Patagonia gear, and those items ar great and work perfectly for me, but the Stretch Triolet just didn't.

I returned it to Patagonia Europe, and they refunded it, no questions asked. I bought a Mountain Hardwear Ethereal FTX parka.

I have a love/hate relationship with this jacket.
Love: the simple styling, the overall fit, the ease with which the pitzips work, the Patagonia construction quality, the outstanding Patagonia DWR, the fabric, the relatively light weight for a jacket of this kind, the front Napolean pocket, the ease of adjusting the hood.

Hate (I'll call it dislike -- hate is too strong a word): the stretch feature causes fleece worn underneath to ride up the arms. The stretch panel can also give a 'pinched' feeling between the shoulder blades when wearing fleece (yes, I do have the correct size jacket). The hood does not allow for good peripheral vision. Range of arm motion is only adequate -- it's somewhat better on my Patagonia Storm and way better on most other technical jackets (e.g. Marmot, North Face, Mountain Hardwear, Arc'Teryx). If you intend to buy this for climbing or any activity requiring lots of overhead arm motion, check it out very carefully to see if it works for you.

Overall, I still like the jacket. I just wish Patagonia would refine the stretch concept to better accomodate arm motion. At the normal price, I think a person could do better with another brand.

Customer Service

None, but they have a good word-of-mouth reputation.

An excellent jacket. Has held up in strong rain and snow storms with no leaks or other problems. Good fit and relatively light weight for a jacket this solid. Plenty of draw cords for sealing out the elements and all are well placed so they stay out of the way. I'd use this jacket for any severe weather anywhere and even just for casual wear.

Customer Service

Haven't had to use it, but have heard they are great.

A bombproof jacket with a smart look. It's flexible and fun to wear. I have worn it skiing and hiking. Patagonia products hold up, and if you
have a problem, send them back!

Customer Service

Over the years I have sent back a number of Patagonia products, which for one reason or another didn't perform as well as I thought they should have.I have never been questioned by the company. It always replaces the gear or gives me a refund. They are remarkable!
