at Ski Loft (off season Home or Favorite Resort: Jackson Hole, Wyoming Product Year: 2001 Summary: These boots are truely the mercedes of ski boots. They are comfortable and offer superior response. Strengths: The Technica Icon X ski boots are an excellent boot. They offer many adjustments and are extremely responsive. These boots are honestly the best boots that I have ever owned. Weaknesses: None. The numerous adjustments take some time to properly set up but after some testing of different setting the Icon X lives up to the Technica reputation. I suggest having a Technica certified boot fitter help with the initial set up. Similar Products Used: Dalbello 707

Price Paid:
$450.00 Home or Favorite Resort: Berthoud Pass CO Product Year: 00-01 Summary: I like the boot a lot. I have a hard to fit foot - sort of funny shaped, and Tecnicas always fit me well. My GPRTs ski a little better, but they're basically unbearable in terms of fit(not the boot's fault).
I do experience some lower leg - above the ankle on the back pain - I can't figure it out, either, but it is not a real problem(I notice it sometimes, but not while skiing). The toe box is a bit narrow for my foot(again, not the boot's fault). Boot fit is SO personal, the best boot for Doug might be the worst boot for Bob. It fits me best of all I've tried.
Main gripe - the toe buckles. I've mangled both toe buckles in 20-25 days skiing so far. I tend to ski "off piste," whatever the appropriate term is these days - in the woods, trees, rocks, not really "extreme," ehh, ungroomed snow. I whacked a rock with the right boot, bent the toe buckle badly. Oh well. It functions enough(glad the toebox is tight!), not a big deal. Next weekend out, landed on a buried rock, mangled the other one, broke a rivet, etc. Huh. I've skied that type of terrain for a while now, in several different boots - my skiing style has not changed in the past 10-12 years(if anything, I'm more conservative now). I've broken a few buckles here and there, but this is sorta silly. Looking around at Berthoud, there are lots of Icon X/Carbons, and *most* of them have similar looking toe buckles. I'm going to make a little ramp & rivet it to the shell ahead of the toe buckle.
I normally don't care about this sort of thing, but be forewarned - the toe buckles are vulnerable, it seems. Never had this much trouble with older TNTs, my GPRTs, my old Koflach Foams, Nordica 981s, Caber Azzuros, Dynafit Comp 3Fs - including 4 seasons as a "ski bum" in Utah and Tahoe.
The upside? Both "modified" buckles still function to some degree.
Otherwise, I love the boots. The places I choose to ski have an inherently higher risk of this sort of damage, no denying that - and if it were not for the fact that I've yet to notice a pair of Icons with healthy toe buckles *and* I've broken a total of 3 or 4 buckles since moving west in 88, well, it seems to me that the shell could use some more protective ramp-thingies to deflect Things That Break Buckles. Strengths: Decent fit, comfortable, ski well. Weaknesses: Toe buckles. Toe buckles are REALLY exposed. Similar Products Used: 1st gen TNTs, 2nd gen TNTs, Nordica GP RTs

Price Paid:
$270.00 Home or Favorite Resort: Rogla Product Year: 00-01 Summary: After my trusty old Top Racers gave out last year I had a lot of trouble finding good fitting boots. Surprisingly Heads, which are supposed to be based on San Marcos would not fit at all.
When I tried the Icons they felt a bit strange at first, but did not give me any cramps or foot pain after about an hour or so in the shop. I figured that with all the adjustments and some bootfitter help I could tailor them to fit me. Also the price was difficult to refuse.
Definitely go for tight race fit when buying these boots. The liner WILL compress after some time and you'll end up with very comfortable boot. Mine were so tight that my toes were hurting when walking with buckles undone. Also got a bit of a black toe when I landed a missed pre-jump and landed way too late. Now after about 20 days of skiing they fit just fine and are very comfortable and warm.
I especially like the responsiveness. I can link fast carved SL turns with ease on any terrain, which was somewhat difficult with my previous boots. Now I can really feel the edge and trust my skis to hold me even with extreme edge angles.
This boots will also help you to stay centred over the skis. My old San Marcos were pretty much all or nothing in this respect. While I was centred they were great but If I got a bit to the back or to the front it was difficult to recover. I really had to push them all the time. Icons seem to have a larger sweet spot and I'm able to cruise almost carelessly now.
One more thing, I have to agree with previous reviewers, unless you are good and strong skier look somewhere else.
Strengths: Very responsive, comfortable when broken in, adjustable, nice flex pattern, good hell hold for my narrow heels Weaknesses: Take some time to break in. Cold when not broken in (like all performance boots). May be a bit difficult to set up with all the adjustments. Don't change to many things at the same time and you'll do fine. Not very comfortable to walk in Similar Products Used: San Marco Top Racer (foam), Nordica Next 9, various Langes I tried over the years

at Peter Glenn Ski & Sport Home or Favorite Resort: Mammoth Mtn. Product Year: 99-00 Summary: Great fitting boots in the store and on the flat runs. Even in the bumps these things are quick and responsive. Very stiff laterally which I like. The problem is with the upper cuff. With some people, serious pain will develope in the back/ outside of your leg just above/and behind the ankle bone. NO bootfitter has any idea of what this is or how to fix it (yes even Sure Foot). So, I can rip one full day with no prob, but by the 2nd day, Im on serious pain killers. Most people don't have this problem and other than this these boots are the best i've ever skied. Strengths: Great Fit around foot Weaknesses: Upper cuff design. Similar Products Used: Tecnica TNT

at Sponsored by Technica Home or Favorite Resort: Mt. Hoot Meadows Product Year: 00-01 Summary: A good allround boot especially good for racing and ice. With three different ways to adjust the sriffness and a heat moldable liner this boot will custamise to almost any skier that is good. Definetly not a good boot for beginers or intermediates. If your going to do mostly carving and groomed slopes but still want to be able to spend a fair amount of time in the park or in the "pow" "pow" this is the boot for you. Strengths: Really comfy boot, three ways to adjust the stiffness of the boot. A great allround boot especially good for racing, ice and carving. Really great lateral support so you always feel in control. Heat moldeable liner so you can get the perfect fit and also a wide power strap so if gives you a lot of support. Weaknesses: Definetly meant for good skiers. If you let your weight get back then it is really hard to get forward again and you will probably loose control. Similar Products Used: Lange L10
