Review Abstract
Skiers say the Talkabout 280 is “convenient” and has a “durable outer shell with rugged construction.” One reviewer says her radio “got fairly wet, but it dried up and works fine now.” You get an “excellent value for the money,” says one reviewer, thanks to the “ecofriendly” rechargeable NIMH battery. Users say this radio is “small and easy to use,” and they don’t have to use different channels to clearly communicate; the range and clarity are strong. Reviewers agree that this radio “takes the cake.”

Summary:
BodyGlove makes a great neoprene suit for these radios. It protects the entire radio and has a clear plastic face that prevents the expensive screen of your radio from being damaged. I've had no problems with the belt clip from the neoprene suit.

I use the large PTT mic with my 280SLK. You can connect this to the radio AND put the neoprene suit on if you open the accessory jack hole just a bit more. This will allow room, but will leave enough to provide enough pressure to keep the mic in place.

Tape the mike key down with black electrical tape, plug it into the radio, and turn the radio on. You have just created your own VOX mike. Hands free and you don't have to worry about wearing it around your head. Clip it to your jacket lapel, pocket, or backpack strap.

Product Year:

Summary:
I have owned two Motorola 280 SLK's for about 3 years now. (see previous posting after owning for one year) We have had no problems at all. After visiting a water theme park one did manage to get wet inside. Under perfect conditions you are not supposed to operate the 280's (or any other radio, for that matter) until all moisture is gone.) That didn't happen here. I didn't notice the water until after I had repeatedly tried to do several different functions; calling, channel scanning, etc. with the radio.

I called Motorola Support: these are non-repairable devices. Motorola will ship a replacement to you for approximately $60; of like model or similar new model if original is not available. It never got this far.

I remove the battery cover and batteries and let the radio sit for 4 days in a warm room to dry completely. Once all water evaporated from the internal components the radio worked fine and I have not had a problem since. It has been at least one year since that incident. I'll bring baggies next time. :-) Feel free to contact me with questions. jtockert@mindspring.com

I bought Motorola for its name and commitment to its products and haven't had any regrets doing so. I am not a Motorola employee nor affiliated with them in any way.

Strengths:
Ownership after 3 years; includes case soaked with water. Continue reading...

Summary:
Due to its high cost it sucks and sould not be concidered.

When buying an FRS radio, you want - things...

Privacy codes...don't question it stupid dick

Waterproofing...if using for skiing obviously

Charger...much better than going to the store to buy batteries

Good range...if it says 2 miles it is really 1 mile for all practical purposes

Scan option...checks all frequencies over and over until it picks up a signal

And more things which I can't remember. Do not buy this stupid setup. It is a rip-off. You will be calling yourself a poop head if you get it.

The reason...

It is over two times as expensive as MANY other models with the same features like the model I bought.

Summary:
This product is the best on the market, that I can tell from observations on the slopes, research, and testing.
It is a good value for the money spent and is a must have for skiing hiking and all recreation activities. Accesories allow you to stow the radio in a safe place and comunicate and hear transmissions hands free with VOX fetures.

Strengths:
Great range( up to 6mi on good tarrain). Very durable. Sounds great. Exelent power usage. Easy to use. Many fetures( VOX) the 14 ch. and 38 eliminatore codes garantie a free channel. Compact and light, Bataries are the heaviest peice. Many accesaries, as all Motorola products, great service.

Weaknesses:
Holding the PTT button for 1 sec before transmitting is hard to get used to.
