at online Home or Favorite Resort: Stowe Product Year: 99-00 Summary: There are plenty of FRS radios on the market. Most are flimsy and cheap. Remember, you GET what you PAY for. I paid $135 when it first came out, it's less expesive now.
The biggest benefit of the 250s and 280s is the big talk button. When riding, put the radio in your breast pocket or shoulder pocket, face out. You don't even need to take the radio out to talk. The big center button makes it easy to press with gloves on through your jacket. Yeah, it's a bit muffled but easier than taking your glove off and pulling the radio out of your jacket to talk. Or if you use the earpiece, again, the big centered button makes it easy to find and push with gloves on.
Other radios have small side PTT buttons. These are difficult at best to use with gloves on. You won't be talking through your jacket with these.
I own two 250's and one 280 and use them all the time, about 14 trips this winter. The 250's are bulky which is why I lend them to my buddies.
NiMH? Nah, get some Lithium Ion rechargable AAs. If you're going for a weekend or longer, bring along a recharger. It's not really cheaper than the NiMH option, but more versitile, especially if you're already got the recharger for your other electronics.
Weather/Radio? Barometer/Altimeter/Compass? Ask yourself, do you really need these? What do you use your radio for? I've already checked the weather before going riding or camping. I'm out there to enjoy the ride/hike, not to listen to the ball game. Altimeter? I look on the map. Compass? Never trust a digital compass. Go with the 280 SLK, it's your best bet. Strengths: The big fat talk button in the center. Weaknesses: A bit bulkier than others. Similar Products Used: Audiovox and Cobra

, from Seattle Home or Favorite Resort: Baker Product Year: 99-00 Summary: Due to its high cost it sucks and sould not be concidered.
When buying an FRS radio, you want - things...
Privacy codes...don't question it stupid dick
Waterproofing...if using for skiing obviously
Charger...much better than going to the store to buy batteries
Good range...if it says 2 miles it is really 1 mile for all practical purposes
Scan option...checks all frequencies over and over until it picks up a signal
And more things which I can't remember. Do not buy this stupid setup. It is a rip-off. You will be calling yourself a poop head if you get it.
The reason...
It is over two times as expensive as MANY other models with the same features like the model I bought. Strengths: - Weaknesses: - Similar Products Used: BellSouth 1022

at X-Mas Present Home or Favorite Resort: Arizona Product Year: 99-00 Summary: These types of products in general save me a lot of time and a lot of hassle in general. Being able to talk to someone when you need to (lost, seperated, etc.) is a big advantage over roaming aimlessly. These in specefic have a nice range and a better quality than others out. 'Talk About's are a respected brand, and one that I've come to trust on the mountain. Strengths: Long range, easy to use, time-savers, I prefer batteries over the NiMH Weaknesses: Pricey, but nothing that affects its quality Similar Products Used: None

at family friend Home or Favorite Resort: snow summit Product Year: 1999 Summary: this is a great 2 way radio to purchase. but, i would suggest the new motorola 2 way radio that came out. it's has all the features of this one and a built in fm/am radio. and at best buy you can get it for about 100...everywhere else is about 150-160 Strengths: it's has pretty good reception. it's small-looks nice. and has many sub channels so people can't bother you while you're trying to talk to someone. Weaknesses: may be too lightweight and lose it Similar Products Used: none yet
