Summary:
Got a couple of these online. I use them on road trips when we have more than one car load and for camping and hiking and hunting. They work great except for the fact that the batteries don't last as long as having regular batteries in the DPS model. If you have the money, get the DPS instead and load it up with NiMh batteries.

Strengths:
Good clean sound

Weaknesses:
battery doesn't last as long as I would like

Mount Snow

Product Year:
1999

Summary:
Good product, widens the range you can travel away from your mates, easy to use and easier to switch to different frequencies than other smaller models.
It is heftier and more cumbersome to put on your person, though. It can be a hassle and a (literal) pain in your side when it catches on a tree branch if worn outside on your belt (using the included belt clip) because the antennae sticks up higher than the smaller 280s and 250s. If you're out in the cold you may have to take off glove or mitts to play with the knobs, but probably not. It has no big buttons like the smaller models, so its not a good model for the kids to use.
I also found that when hunting in deep brush/deep valleys, I could lose contact with my party, and upon verify afterward they were within the 5 mile limit, sometimes almost 4. That's a small complaint, and this gives you much more range than the others, but depending on what you're doing, 5 miles can be a short distance (or a long one). Still better than anything else out there, and if you break one, they're pretty quick about fixing them (though depending on what you do to it, you may just wanna' buy a new one.)

Strengths:
Longer distance, more frequencies

Weaknesses:
Bigger size, weight, doesn't always work in valleys

Summary:
I really like these radios. They are very durable and the fit and finish is very good. What I really love about them is the distance they transmit. Either way, whether you decide on the regular FRS or these Talkabout Distance radios, get one. You'll never leave home without them once you have them...

Strengths:
Distances further than the FRS radios, channel scan, dual bands for compatibility between older motorola radios, and solid construction.

Weaknesses:
It's a little larger and heavier than the other Talkabouts and it costs a lot more. But, it's worth it...

Summary:
We first used these on a trip to Switzerland. My wife broke her leg and these little babies allowed me to go out and enjoy some sights while still staying in close contact with my love. I could even talk to here from the hospital to the train station...and until the train pulled out of town. Not sure of that distance. I walked it in soft snowboard boots so it's not to far :) Oh yes, the helicopter ride was spectacular...and only $1200 for less than 10 minutes :(
