Seems like a great rod. 8'6" 5 wt. 4 pcs. Very similar feel to a friends $400 + sage. feels like an expensive rod for a reasonable price. However, it may have been the anglers fault (me), but i had the rod snap about 6 inches from the tip without putting too much pressure on it. love the lifetime warranty. hope it doesn't happen again!

Customer Service

Just sent back my imperial for replacement. Customer service was prompt and the lady was very helpful!

I've recently owned both the 8' and the 8'6" model 5 wts and I can tell you there is a world of difference between the two. The shorter 8' is much stiffer in the lower portion and is much more difficult to load up with a 5 wt line but a 6 wt is much easier. The 8'6" model is more of an actual 5 wt and it is a much better rod. I only wish I could get my hands on the 2 piece 9' model to compare them to. Great rod for the money.

Strength:

Too many to list excellent flex and and overall flawless performance.

Weakness:

none

St. Croix has definetly put together an exceptional rod with value and cost in mind for us budget fisherman. This rod easily rivals many 3 and 4 hundred dollar rods.Which is great why in the hell would you spend that much anyway? When St. Croix makes it easy to get into fly fishing without taking out a loan to get quality gear.I have test casted 30-40 other rods and the Imperial is the most balanced and sensitive rod I have encountered. And it is exploding with features.SCII blanks quality cork handles, uplocking walnut reel seats,it looks as good as it performs!!So go ahead waste your hard earned bucks on a merely equal rod when it costs twice as much. And then head down to your favorite water hole and I bet most of the anglers choose this rod over the sage or orvis models.Take it from me I did alot of research in how I was going to spend my money. It was a tough desicion but I know I made the right in the end, value quality and performance.

Weakness:

Well, it broke in half with little force. I think it was defective.

This is a great rod. It feels awesome.

Customer Service

With the lifetime warranty, I just mailed the broken rod back and within a week or two I had their new model on my doorstep.

Strength:

Value vs cost. Good, solid, all around rod. I can fish midges or weighted woolies without problems.

Weakness:

None that I can find, especially when price is considered.

I have the 9'' 2pc. It has been my main choice for almost 6 years now. I have never had it fail when I did my part.

Customer Service

Outstanding. I trashed the rod at the San Juan River (left it on top of the van, blew off- got ran over). I mailed it directly to St Croix. A brand new rod was sitting at my front door on the followin

Strength:

Classy colors and wood spacer.

Weakness:

I''ve noticed one or two of the line guide foot wraps have thread ends sticking through the finish.

Used the new 9 foot 5 weight Imperial on Centre County''s Spring Creek on 01/12/02. After living with a Fenwick Glass 7 1/2 footer for a 5 weight since 1977, the relative stiffness and resultant casting power was a revelation. I see the action on the Imperial is called "medium". I''d not be too anxious to experience a "fast" action graphite. Must be the fiberglass influence. Anyway, I managed a trout or two with the new St. Croix stick on our first attempt.

Customer Service

I have not had the need to use it, yet.
