Well what a beauty. Sage who? I was lucky enough to get a weekend with a legend ultra 3 wt, and that sold me on the rod. My new 6 wt 3 piece is a dream, and makes flyfishing that much better. It is a top quality rod, and I now know that I will never own a sage in my life. Craig

Strength:

overall a good rod. when it's working, it handles almost as nicely as Scott's high-end S-models.

Weakness:

ferrules

Rod performs well when the ferrules don't slip, but ferrules always slip. I broke the rod in my 2nd month when the connection closest to the tip got loose. On my back cast, the connection broke and both ferrules splintered. The lifetime warranty is great, but having to continuously send the rod back and pay $10 each time can get tiresome and expensive. After having the rod serviced, the ferrules still come loose.

Strength:

nice feel and versatility.

Weakness:

Darned if I can find any. I guess if you are in the arms race for the fastest action rod, this might fall a bit shy of the mark.

I got my hands on this rod after shattering my other 5 wt (no warranty) in a local lake. Honestly I had every intention of walking out with a new G Loomis GL3, but after casting the two side by side it was a no brainer for me. I preferr an 8'6 length for my stroke but opted for the 9' to cover nymphing and short line use as well. I tend to agree with some of the other posts, the action is just a bit shy of what I would feel "fast", but suits me perfectly. On my last quickie trip I hurriedly packed what I thought to be my 5 wt reel and headed to the stream only to discover my salt (8 wt) reel in my fanny pack. With no choice but to strap it on, I did so and was amazed at the rods backbone. I got curious and began stripping line and double hauling..... the rod finally ran out of legs, but not until I could see the backing visible beneath the few remaining coils of fly line on the reel. Accuracy, light touch (with the right line!), versatility...... I don't see how you can find a better value for your $

Strength:

Price, appearance, profile and weight

Weakness:

Ferrule system. For some reason, the St. Croix Ultra Legend ferrule system appears to be more prone to slippage after repeated casting. Certainly more so than other rods I've used and built.

Based on 4-piece Ultra Legend blank custom made. Excellent profile, responsive, lightweight. As usual, St. Croix delivers a great value.

Customer Service

Haven't needed it.

Strength:

Over quality for the price.

Weakness:

None so far.

Purchased it as an upgrade to a St Croix Pro Graphite 5 Wt. The Legend is an excellent value for the money. The overall quality is superb and it casts very well. The accompaning rod case is well made and sturdy.

Customer Service

Excellent - My first St Croix Rod broke when I fell on a rock in a stream. It was replaced no questions asked.

Strength:

Price. It rivals $500 rods in performance. If you want the prestige, buy Sage or Orvis. If you want a great rod, buy the St. Croix Legend Ultra. Also, St. Croix is one of the few remaining rods made in the U.S.

Weakness:

The St. Crois Avid series is a better value. The Avid has a medium fast action rather than fast, and is not quite as polished in appearance, but an amazing rod. At $180 it rivals $450 rods with bigger names!

I have the 4-piece 5 weight. Perfect blend of power and feel. The most remarkable aspect is how effortless it is to cast weight and for distance: I just fished the salmon fly hatch on the Madison River, Montana. The rod effortlessly threw size 4 weighted nymphs, with split shot, and also threw size 4 dry flies 50+ feet accurately. Very attractive handle and guides.

Customer Service

Great service: I spliied and fell on the rod while wading a river, snapping the butt section. They replaced the section, no questions asked in about a week.
