Strength:

nice matt finish, good components.

Weakness:

too soft for a #8 -works best with a #7 SW line, actually very happy with a 555 #6 floater

a very dissapointing rod -it replaced an orvis #8 tipflex and is just too soft for saltwater work with any kind of wind -okay on a nice day but on the flats its a let down on a windy day - leaves the guide looking at you sideways since it doesnt have much backbone.

Weakness:

Ferrules are problematic in the long run. If you want a rod that will "last," a Legend rod is defintely not the one. Abide by murphy's law in this case, and do spend the extra cash and get something quality that you'll be happy with not just for the first few seasons, but the one's further down the road, when quality and durability of product is put to the test.

I had serious ferrule jamming problems with a Legend 9'6" 8 weight fly rod after using it for a few steelheading seasons. Basically, the ferrules tended to jam up and the rod would not come apart, especially after fishing with it all day. In fact, I fished one day on the Garcia River here in Northern California and it started to rain and for some strange reason the rod decided to jam at the ferrule that day so bad I couldn't break it down to get it in my car. I ended up driving in the rain all the way home with it sticking out of my window. A lot of my gear and inside of my vehicle got a good soaking to top it off.

Customer Service

Terrible and extremely poor. Rain story aside, a basic principle is at issue: St. Croix claims lifetime warranty on the Legend line. However, in my attempt to follow up on the Legend "lifetime" warrranty claim, St. Croix wanted to charge me basically for a new rod to replace a rod that had failed in terms of the integrity of the ferrules. They offered me an Avid as a replacement for a Legend, so go figure. As I said, the rod was fine for a few seasons, but that's it. If you want a rod that will last, don't buy a St. Croix!!! Definetly spend the extra $80 or so bucks and get a rod that you can trust. If you're really interested or have had similar problems with St. Croix customer service or warranties, I have copies of my reply to the customer service department, and I have copies of their reply--basically a demand letter to replace my rod. I'm not one for cliches, but in the case of St. Croix, you get what you pay for . . .

Strength:

Nice balance of action allowing for delicate presentations as well as power casts. Thoughtful details such as non-glare finish and titanium reel seat. Lifetime unlimited warranty. (I broke the tip off mine and they replaced it-no questions asked-Immediately.)

Weakness:

This is not a weakness, but if you want a rod specifically for delicate presentations and shorter casts or conversely for power distance casting, This may not be the rod for you. It is more middle of the road and performs well at both. But not perfectly at either. Most people would consider that a strength. Especially if you own just one 8 weight.

The hype about this rod is definately justified. I own the UFT908 model and am 100% satisfied. It is a bit soft for a "fast" rod, but that really helps when trying to be delicate in sight fishing. Just enough backbone for distance casting too. The other thing about this rod is it is cosmetically stunning. Non-glare finish is great. Titanium reel seat is strong and reliable. Meticulous craftsmanship (better than my more expensive Orvis Trident TL)

Customer Service

Outstanding, replaced/fixed rod for free no questions asked.
