Strength:
- SMOOTH casting - Great fit/finish - Great warranty
Weakness:
Price, although it's no worse than any of the other manufacturers I've been fly-fishing for over 25 years in Montana. After fishing a number of rods, I finally saved enough money to buy my 'perfect' Montana fly rod. After months of research, casting every rod from all of the namebrand manufacturers (as well as a couple of off-brands), I settled on a Winston 8'6" 5#, with a Ross G2 reel. After fishing it for hundreds of days, I couldn't be happier. I've now got 3 Winston's, 1 Orvis, a Sage, which should tell you what I think of Winstons. Bottom line, if you gave me an unlimited budget to spend on a single fly rod to use for the rest of my life and I was fishing for trout, I'd buy my exact same setup again, no questions asked. Everytime I hand my rod to companions and they fish with it for a few minutes, they marvel at how effortlessly it casts, and I find it difficult to get my rod back. Customer Service Awesome. I've broken my rod twice already (chucking buggers I've scored the blanks numerous times), and they've replaced the sections with no questions asked for no charge. Strength:
The action: casting feels light yet sure, the rod has lots of backbone. This rod is my go-to rod because it deals with 95% of my fishing situations, from very small dries to nymphs and small to mid-sized streamers.
Weakness:
Not for those who want a fast-action rod. They should buy Sage XPs. Faster rods may be better for certain situations - big, bushy flies etc. For these SPs and XP''s are the way to go. If you can find this rod, buy it. This is the rod I always use now. I had used faster rods - this required some adjustment before I cast properly. Once you do adjust, you understand why Winston owners are so fanatical about their flyrods. This has now become my go-to rod for all situations. Customer Service No experience yet.
