I bought the Nike ACG Ascent Compass Watch (WG56-4000) about nine years ago for about $200, I have never had any serious problems with it. I’ve replaced the battery three times, and the band once after it broke where the pin goes in. The barometer is always accurate, and the altimeter is perfect for my needs, with just a five to ten feet deviation at times. My only reservations are that the compass needs to be calibrated often, and that the thermometer does not work when it is worn on the wrist since it is affected by the body’s temperature. I bought the watch just before a trip to Venezuela, I wanted something that was not so conspicuous, such as the “sun dials” manufactured by some other companies, and this fit the bill perfectly. The alarms are loud enough to wake me up, and it comes with two time functions so one can keep track of different time zones in different international cities. The watch came in a variety of colors, including black, which is perfect for when traveling abroad.

Bought that watch in Austria about 5 years ago. Today our puppy has eaten the strap, thus making the watch unuseable. Kindly let me know where to order the the spare one. I haven's seen this watch in the Czech Republic. Thanks. KD

great watch, i just lost it in the gym locker room and im pissed.
i had this watch for about 3 years. bought it on whim, didnt do any research into altimeter watches, i just liked the price and the fact that it wasnt the size of an ancient sundial on my wrist. had used it on many many mountaineering trips including two to denali. accurate enough on altitude for general mountaineering use. when i would compare it to my buddies who all had much more expensive altimeter watches, it was always withing 100ft of their readings (of course you have to calibrate it at known elevations), never used the compass. never used any of the other functions. it got very very scratched up climbing due to the face which has no protection from the surrounding plastic, but still worked well. replaced the battery and no problems. now i need to find another one. i wonder if the new models are as good.

The watch seemed like a steal at $50 bucks, so I picked it up. It worked extremely well for what i used it for. It did everything it was supposed to do. My lettering over the buttons is still there, after a year. My only comlaints come now. After replacing the battery the watch went haywire, i can't wear it or else the movement will reset the dern thing.

I didn't have this product for a long time(settled on a Suunto with HRM). However, I thought it seemed very well made. There were 2 reasons why I eventually chose the Suunto. 1. Altitude on the Nike is updated every 2 minutes. Too long of a span if you're cycling, especially with fast descents. 2. Suunto is much more comfortable on the wrist. 3. Suunto battery is user-replaceable. Watches with all these functions use a lot of battery power. 4. Suunto has very handy log books and history--for example, I can set the watch to keep track of all the altitude climbed this season. And it has a heart monitor. As I read these reviews, I really wonder about people who complain that the altimeter has to constantly calibrated. Of course it does! All barometric altimeters do. There's no perfect altimeter--even GPS units

I have had a good experience so far with my watch. I got the Lance Armstrong edition in titanium on Ebay,I've been using now for about two months and with the exception of a few strange altimeter readings the watch has been fine. The watch keeps very good time, no problems there. The compass is dead on, I would definately use this watches compass in the backcountry. The altimeter has been pretty reliable. The few exceptions are: While going over the Grapevine in Los Angeles I got a reading of 1500' below the actual elevation. This was at night. Coming back over the Grapevine during the day the altimeter was dead on. While on a cruise the altimeter would read -15' below sea level. Now, since the boat wasn't sinking at this time the altimeter was obviously off. But when I re-calibrated it to zero and went to the top of the cruise ship I got an accurate reading of 120'. I find that the altimeter is more often than not on or near the actual elevation most of the time. I live at 220' and as I type this the watch is reading 210'. Who knows, the high point of my town is 220', I'm obviuosly not at the highpoint because I don't live at the site in a shopping mall so, maybe my watch is dead on. Ten feet though, is nothing to be worried about. 10' in the mountains is nothing. On to the other features: The barometer has been dead on too. While on the cruise we were without local weather so we didn't know what the next days weather would be. I would look at the watch, it gave me a forecast and it was never wrong. If the watch said it was going to be rainy it was, cloudy, sunny, overcast-it was.Awesome! One of the downfalls of this watch is the uber-crappy instruction manual. Holy Crap! You can definately tell it was written in another country by someone with a vauge understanding of English. If it was any more bare bones than it already is it wouldn't exist.Suunto has great, very detailed instructions, Nike should pay attention. I have no idea how to use the data function or the ski function( not that it really matters as I haven't skiied in 3 years), but that really doesn't matter as the functions that I bought the watch for work fine. I laughed a few times when I read some of the other reviews about this and that rubbing off or this not working "up to my expectations". Oh boo-hoo, stop your belly-aching.How much did you spend on the watch? $100? What do you expect in a $100 watch? Do you think a precision time piece like a Bulova or something should be under the Nike face plate? Gee-Awd! I have lost count of how many watches I have had in my lifetime but, I do know that ALL of the button function writing on ALL of the watches was rubbed off over time. The thing is though, that unless you are retarded you should probably be able to remember what button does what after a few weeks worth of use. The cool thing about my titanium Lance Armstrong watch is that the function names are all ENGRAVED. Oh my, you mean, they can do that? Yes my little retarded son it's called thinking ahead. Man, if you want a multi functioning watch that is always on target that you don't have to calibrate then take out a second mortgage on your house and buy a $7,000 Bulova or Seiko. If you don't have that kind of money then spend $130 like I did and be perfectly content with making a smart well-informed decision. One other note, the backlight is very bright, I can use it as a flashlight in the dark, but only lasts for three seconds.I with they had given the user the option of leaving the backlight on permanently. Also the alarm function is a little limiting, you can't set the alarm to go off in two days, you can only set it by time. Other than that the watch is fine, we'll see if my opinion changes once the battery needs changing.

After a year of very light use, the button labels wore off! I'n not sure why Nike didn't put the labels under the glass instead of on top of the watch face where they wear off! It is lame to try to remember how a watch is supposed to work when there are no button labels. My 5 year old $30 timex has held up way better than this! The temperature function is pretty worthless, and the rest of the watch seemed to work ok until I returned it. I guess I will try a Suunto as it seems way better but twice the price.

Customer Service

Luckily, I bought it at REI and was able to get my money back.

Very disappointed. I purchased the watch under the influence of a sales person who offered my 15% off retail price. Now I know why. Not something I expected from a brand such as Nike. Foolish investment on my part. After the first week I had it out climbing when I went for a simple grab that scraped the face-plate right off, tumbling down through crevices that were too small to reach for. Now I'm stuck with a watch without a face plate. Do I dare asking for a replacement.??
