Mountaineer

I already own three various Thommen Altimeters reading the altitude in both meters and feet, so i have years of experience with the use of these stunningly beautiful mechanical instruments.

Two of them stand on a shelf in my bedroom, providing daily indication of barometric pressure change, the other is still in it's presentation box, intended as a gift, but could not bare to part with it.

The Thommen Classic altimeter, is certainly not a cheap mass market affair, its like a Swiss watch, incredibly well made and put together.

The majority of altimeters used by the public, are battery digital affairs, fine in decent weather, but when temperatures really plummet, battery life will be always an issue.

This is why the Thommen Classic has remained ever so popular in the mountaineering circles, that require the use of such instruments.

Totally reliable, made to exacting Swiss standards, and reassuringly expensive.

It could be seen as an investment, as its never likely to become faulty, and if taken care of, will last many years.

This is a great little device. It is totally analog... no circuits, no batteries, just some good old thermodynamics. I originally used my uncle''s Thommen when backpacking out in Montana. Its accuracy was increadible. The swiss must have used thier watch-making skills to construct the TX/20. The device must be calibrated everyday as it changes with the ambient pressure. This however is an advantage since it can act as a barometer, indicating any changes in weather. The analog face takes some getting used to (it is not a digital readout), but anybody wanting accuracy and reliability (no dead batteries or fragile electronics) will be more than willing to accept this. My uncle''s was an older model. I bought one recently and was very impressed with the way they kept the same design. I am sure that all of the internal workings were the same. It comes encased in hard plastic and a neckstrap is included. The price admittedly is high, but once you get this baby, you will forget about it all together. Besides, the years of use that you will recieve negates the cost completely (opinion.) I highly recommend this product to anybody willing to invest the money... it will last you for years.

Customer Service

I did not really deal with Fresh Tracks Map''s customer service. I did an online order, and the altimeter was shipped rather quickly. I have bought a few other items from this company and think that

I have used a couple of altimeter/watches and have found them completely unreliable. I must speculate too that the years of use a person would get from an electronic altimeter pales in comparison to
