An excellent compass for most uses provided you have a needle compass back-up, since it does rely on batteries. The anti-tilt feature is good, and it is accurate to about 2 degrees, good enough for all but long-distance backpacking in remote terrain. I especially like the ability to lock in and store a bearing. The Outback to some extent has been superseded by its own manufacturer, as electronic compasses of the same quality can now be found in the Brunton MNS GPS receiver and in the newer Garmin units just coming onto the market. But you must always carry a backup needle compass in case of battery failure.
