It's difficult to believe that Limmers are out there for all the LL Bean yupsters to buy, but if you want more than a boot, if you want to wear a legend, a cult classic among footwear, check there boots out. WARNING! these boots are not for the faint of heart. If you are someone who cries about how much boots weigh, buy Nike. If you are a serious backpacker who wants the best boots on earth, and aren't afraid of a little break-in time, check out Limmers. For those of you who are new to this boot, its been being made in the same design since 1918. In fact I'm amazed to see them in brown. That was done only for a short time in the 60's or 70's. Otherwise they're basically the same boot as always. The real way to go is to get your foot custom fitted, and wait 3 1/2 years for a custom pair. There's only two guys who build 'em, and they don't work for L.L. that's for sure. They're built in a cool old barn that doubles as a shrine to Limmer lovers the world over. This place, and I'm not telling you where it is, is wallpapered with photos of Limmers in front of about every major peak on earth, not to mention some more exotic places, like the Taj Mahal, weddings, and a Dead show. I got my Limmers about five years ago, and no other boot would even have stood a chance at lasting so long on my feet. Despite their incredibly rugged construction (the soles are glued and screwed), my customs had zero break-in time. I started hiking 10-12 miles a day with loads of 60-100lbs out of the box, and never got a blister. Two years of work for the AMC back east worked them pretty severe, but I continually meet hikers who are still wearing the Limmers they bought as long as thirty years ago. I have probably 2500 miles on these boots, and have had three resoles. Unfortunately with each resole, a little more of the boot body was pulled in to restitch the welt. My precious customs are now a little too snug for extended wilderness trips with high milage days. Fortunately, Limmer has already changed their resole procedures, so the soles can be redone without the removal and restitching of the midsole. Limmer is not just a boot company, they are a Family, and I only hope that the L.L. Bean name, while renowned will not tarnish these legendary boots.

Customer Service

L.L. Bean has one of the best guarantees in the industry, and the Limmer family is even cooler.

Peter Limmer has apparently ""outsourced"" his boots to a factory in the Bavarian Alps, a far cry from Intervale, N.H. and the 3 1/2 year wait for customs. However, I just bought a pair of the ""mass-produced"" Limmers, and they fit like a glove outta the box! The leather is MAGNIFICENT! Sorta the Coach bags of hiking boots. The shank is stiff and I couldn't bend em. Should be good for heavy loads on rough trails. They seem like the kinda boots that will become better friends as you grow old together.

I wanted to give an update on the Limmer mid-weights I purchased (though not through L.L. Bean)some weeks back. I just completed about a fifteen mile circuit on Connecticut's Nehantic trail with a SICK load (about 65 lbs.) as a tune up for a more extended trip to the backcountry of Newfoundland this summer. And here's what I think of my Limmers. THIS WAS ABSOLUTELY THE BEST PURCHASE I HAVE EVER MADE IN MY LIFE! The Limmers performed splendidly right out of the box. They fit like a glove immediately and required no break-in period at all. They were immediately comfortable for the few days that I wore them to work to break them in for this hike.During the hike, they performed flawlessly and not once did I find ANY hot spots, pressure points or discomfort. The firm shank supported the heavy load I was carrying very well, and the Vibram Montana sole gave me sure footing across scrabble, rocks, ledges, roots and plank bridges. Much of the walk went through bogs and swamps and it was unavoidable to get my feet wet, but the Limmers kept me bone dry throughout. I'm a big guy (6'5"", 300 lbs.) and I've been active enough over my 49 years that I've put quite a strain on my feet, and so now I'm stricken with pretty bad dogs. The Limmers kept me safe, dry and comfortable beyond any of my hopes. Ounce for ounce, they are worth several times their weight in gold!!!!!

I got my Limmers in '86 (big black & heavy) after 1 yr for $180 and they've been GREAT ever since. Up & down Mtneer's Route on Whitney, thru 7 yrs of snow camping, great friction on rock to 5.6-nothing comes close to these beautiful clunkers. Leather has cracked a bit around the flex point & they leak a bit so I don't use 'em for snow anymore but for rock climbing they're the BEST! I'm suffering now in Vasque Apex boots (too narrow even in EEE) so I'm going to try the mass produced Meindls. Don't understand why Asolo, Vasque, etc. don't make a boot with a squared off toe that matches wide feet!
Limmer FOREVER!!!
