This model of Vasque shoes seems to enjoy its repuatation for quite sometime. However, there is a version of Sundowner that are made in China would not make a good choice. I have had several pairs and side-by-side comparision left me with a distinct impression that the version made in Italy is far much better in terms of quality and feel.

This for the Sundowner GTX II. Nice looking but ill-fitting. No cushioning around ankles, hard to tighten laces properly. Expensive! Look out for heel slippage, even with dif. lacing techniques. Switched to Asolo GTXs and they're like velvet tanks.

Customer Service

REI took them back without question.

I am a contractor by trade , not a hiker by any means, but i do use these boots to go to stone mountain, and everyday walking around. I've used, abused, ive submerged these boots to ankle deep water, and they've preformed flawlessly. I always clean them, use mink oil (although they suggest using some other protectant). I purchased these boots 3 years ago, and haven't even had to re-sole them yet (and i wear them everyday). They do look used, but keep their original look....sometimes they look really dingy because i get them full of red clay/mud, but once cleaning them and reapplying mink oil, they look almost as good as new....I can't say enough about them....Some people have problems with them (fit), and i cannot comment on the italian made ones from before, but these have proved to be a more than loyal companion for me. For the $160 bucks i've paid i think i've gotten ten times as much. I remember purchasing a $250 dollar pair of really nice timberlands (not the cheap ones) these were really nice, and they only lasted 2 years, and gave up...These boots are excellent. Like i said i'm not a hiker, but i use them to climb on ladders, roofs, put them through mud, rain, standing water, and they've never allowed my feet to get wet, nor have i gotten blisters out of them.....I was so happy with them that i just recently purchased the two-tone sundowners (7930 model), and a new pair of the burgundy ones from red wing shoes...I will probably buy the gtx2's down the road, they're a little more pricey (but they're italian made)....

Customer Service

I haven't re-soled the boots, but red wing shoes is the best place to get your boots. I just recently purchased some Irish setters, and they made my toes blister after a month of using them, they took them back no questions asked, and i upgraded to a new pair of sundowners, red wing shoes you're a helluva company!!!!

I bought the Vasque Sundowners off of a recommendation of a professor who has owned two pairs of Sundowners. To my dismay, I have not had the luck he has had with these boots. I purchased them a few weeks before a big trip in New Mexico. I wore them around to break them in before I went but I found that it wouldnt do any good. These boots absolutely KILL my ankles. The top eyelet constantly dug into my ankels through my hiking socks to rub the skin red. I ended up not lacing them all the way up since I was in so much pain. The cushioning on these boots is also a joke. I bought some inserts to help and they feel decent now but it was pretty bad before. After my return I took the boots back to complain and they took to top intrusive part out of they eyelet. I must say this has helped, but they still iritate my ankel to the point that they are no where near comfortable. Long story short, I will never buy Vasque again. This is not to say they are not good boots, so far them have seemed to hold up well but they are not comfortable at all! I had a fitting in the store before I purchased them but you cant get a real feel until you are on the trail, and by then you are too late. My best advise is try them on first and if there is a hint of pain, STAY AWAY! Im sure they are great for some people (my professor swears by them) but if your foot/ankle is shaped like mine your in for troube.

I have a pair of Danner Light II that are great. They are very comfortable but I might be a bit concerned with the gore-tex lining. i have no complaints with these boots though, the come recommended by me.

I cannot say enough about these boots. For the price I paid, it was a complete bargain. I use these boots for every occassion. Work, Hike, Play, you name it, this is the right boot. Not one blister, although I had to test wear three pair to find the correct fit (I'm a size 12EEE). Have had them for 1 year and they still look and feel like new. I love them!!!

Absolute Garbage! I have a pair of Italian Sundowners that I dearly, dearly love. I just unwittingly bought a new pair of the Chinese version. In short, the new Sundowner is complete, total crap. The fit is very different than the Italian boot. The right and left boots in my pair have totally different arches. They're completely unwearable. What a pathetic turn of events: the Sundowner used to be a legend among hikers and backpackers. There should be a special place in Hell for Redwing for selling out like this.

I don't know what some are complaining about, but these boots are my life (as far as my feet go). I wear them for all my 50 mile PCT wilderness hikes. I also wear them to church, playing soccer, working construction etc. etc. They have been so comfortable, long lasting and perfectly water proof that I can't see any reason to complain. I have now had 3 pairs. The first I cut through with a beam saw (barley missed my flesh). The second I still own and the third I still own. I did re-sole one pair and they seem heavier than before, so I primarily use them for construction now. I love these boots. I have lucked out by getting them at reduced prices the two I now own due to the scratch and dent sales at REI.

Customer Service

Never used them. Maybe I should have for recommendations on re-soling.

The fit is fantastic, I have taken them on trips to Glacier, Grand Canyon, Glen Canyon, Smokey Mountain, Yellowstone, Gunnison, and many other N.P's,N.F.'s,and wilderness areas in a little less than two years. They are great day hikers, but I perfer something more rigid for extended stays. I have never gotten blisters form them thanks to there glove-like fit. I wish that Vasque would design a sundowner with a rubber toe guard and plenty of vibram which are non-exsistant with them. The soles now are chewed up and the leather has quite a few cuts in them. I have retired them now, but I would never out rule them on a day hike.
