The Ponderosa is a great bag. Very generous in size and fill. I could never again spend a cold night outdoors without this bag. I wanted a lightweight bag and at first baulked at the 3 lb. weight. Decided that an extra pound was worth a warm nights sleep. Can''t

I cannot stand mummy bags because of how restrictive they are for movement. So, when I decided to replace my old Air Force down mummy bag (its an old, BIG mummy bag), I found that almost every down bag made today is as tight as an old leisure suit on anyone over 140lbs. I had sought a nice semi-rectangular or rectangular down bag in the $200 range. Well, no reputable, quality-minded companies make rectangular bags anymore, so semi-rectangular it was. I went to a local hiking store whom I knew to carry good products. I tried out a few bags, none of which impressed me. For laughs, I tried out a Western Mountaineering Ponderosa bag...the second I got into it, I knew I was going home with it. Roomy, the right temperature range (rated conservatively, in my opinion) double zippers (a separate one at the feet lets you unzip and open up the area around your feet while the rest of the bag is zipped...brilliant design)...not to mention the engineering and quality of materials and construction that have gone into this bag are truly remarkable. As pricey as these are (around 350-380), they are worth every penny...they're made in Ca by a small, independant company owned and run by backpacker(s). Bite the bullet and get one if you want a good down bag...I don't see any reason why these bags won't last 20 years if taken care of.

Before you say I'm crazy for spending
that much money on a bag, let me say
it was worth every cent. I'm a light
weight nut and a 3 lbs. bag that will
keep you warm as toast, looks and fells
like a million bucks, and is roomy
enough for a big guy over 6'is priceless
on a cold night. The quality of workmanship and materials used insures
that this is the last bag I will need
to buy for the next 10 years. It fully
unzips into a large comforter. It is so
comfortable and pretty, I keep it on my
bed year round. I can't say enough about this bag. You can't go wrong with
Western Mountaineering products.
