This stove was purchased to get the nice 550B burner with a separate tank, and.

Easy to use, reliable, and simmers well, no priming needed, silent. Safe to use.

But: Needs transport box. Small parts in pump if you need to do field service. Plastic threads on the pump. Hose is not sold separatly. Produses more CO than other stoves. (NATO-test)

Later Coleman stoves are not that easy to use!

Customer Service

Limited availability in Europe, slow but good and expensive.
The hose may be replaced if you are handy. Just use metal sheathed gasoline hose. Clamping the hose is sensitive. Don't make it to long!

Nor really, but Optimus Nova may simmer as good the Apex, but needs preheating, and roars.

Bought my Peak 1 Apex about 14 years ago while on Military training excersises in Maine. This little stove has worked reliably ever since. I bet it has more than 300 hours of operating time on it. The only problem I ever had was, afer about 10 years of use, the plastic pump threaded fitting area cracked. I ordered a new assembly from Coleman and it has worked great since. I have used other liquid fuel and cannister fuel stoves- but this one has always operated best- hands down. It is self priming, easily maintained, lightweight, and reliable. I wish Coleman would bring this line back out.

Customer Service

Coleman responded quickly when I had to order a new pump assembly. In fact I was surprised I could still get parts for it. I checked today and Coleman still has the pump assembly listed in its parts available.

I've had mine for over 10 years and while not the hard-core backpacker it's gotten hundreds of hours of usage. The ability to empty the fuel cans and rinse them out prior to flying is a big plus as I try to get some hiking in on business trips where possible. Filling the can with unleaded when I get there means no need to waste fuel or be subject to the flight restrictions. I highly recommend it for that and the fact that it's a great stove for the average backpacker's needs.

I got this stove over 10 years ago when I started backpacking "lighter and smarter". Over the years of backpacking and motorcycle and mountain bike camping it has served me very well. I cant recall any operating problems and only minor service like o-rings once in a while. I was surprised by how stable it was. Im sure there are faster hotter stoves, but Im not in any big hurry. A couple of extra minuets does not bother me.
But like all good things it had to come to an end. Mine too had the fuel line crack. I have not searched for a repair but I will soon. At the coxing of my son, (he was not even born when I bought this stove) Im going to try a canister stove, but I bet Im back to using the Apex soon and the canister stove is relegated to my son. Hmmm I wonder if he planned it that way. In short, Its always worked, never given me any problems and lasted alot longer than I expected it too. You cant go wrong.

Customer Service

Never had to use it.

Pretty good stove. Used it nearly weekly for about 5 years. Good simmer and excellet fuel economy. was out on a winter treck (-5F) and got to camp at 11:30 pm and fulel line was leaking like crazy at attachment point to fuel bottle to render stove useless. Moral: treat fuel line with care so as to not overbend it or stress it during transport and storage. Nearly destroyed plastic threads on fuel pump assembly - so treat them carefully.

Customer Service

Several o ring replacements on fuel pump assembly,

I've used many different stoves (Whisperlite, Peak1 "classic", etc.) and this is my hands-down favorite. It baffles me why this stove wasn't more popular...I'm not sure Coleman makes it anymore. It's lightweight yet always reliable with a good blue flame. It's low profile makes it less tippy than other stoves and it's self-priming unlike my old Whisperlite, which I was constantly having to clean and repair.

Customer Service

Never had to use it.

This is my 1st stove that I’ve ever owned. Very reliable and easy to set up. I pack mine into a 6 cup Rubbermaid container. This way I do not worry about bending or damaging any part of the stove. I have owned this stove for 6+ years and it has never fail me.

This stove is without question, the most reliable stove that I have ever used, for one good reason. It is the only stove I have used for about ten years. Many of my friends have high tec, feather weight, $100+ units that simply don't match up. On a recent trip to New York's Adirondack Mt in -30 weather the stove performed like a charm. A real life saver in that situation!

I've had the Apex II for 8 years and the MSR Dragonfly for 5. The Apex never fails, always works, easily packs into my MSR cookset, great simmer, the pump is almost entirely metal (as opposed to the plastic and frequently breaking MSR pumps). It makes some noise (as all liquid fueled stoves will), but not nearly as much noise as the Dragonfly, boil times are as short as the Whisperlight (shorter than the Dragonfly). The only downside I can think of is that the stove is made from thin sheet metal that bends fairly easily. When you're tromping back to the tent from a pee-hike at 2:00am in your hiking boots and you step on the stove, it will bend. Don't worry, it will bend back. I guess I could also wish for more than one sized fuel bottle, but the 22oz bottle that comes with the stove is equivalent to the most useful MSR bottle size and will last for three days of cooked lunches and dinners for two in temperate camping (no snow melting) so I can't complain too much. For longer trips, I carry a 32oz MSR fuel bottle and refill from that.

Customer Service

The stove just works, I never had to deal with Coleman customer service, so I can't say.

Easy to use, small enough to stow in one of the pots. No drawbacks. But after almost 10 years of troublefree use in almost any weather the fuelline gave in. Trouble is that it seems impossible to replace only the fuelline the whole pumpassembly needs to be replaced ($ 30,-) Fuelline not even 5,- ??
