Best white gas stove made. Does not simmer well, but what kind of fancy meals are you cooking, anyway?! Boils water and melts snow like a champ. Fuel efficient, simple to maintain, can get parts anywhere in the world (just about!). Priming can be a bit of a spectacle, but if you are careful it is no problem - just don't fire this baby up inside a tent! It is also lightwieght and compact for a white gas stove. You need one of these for extended trips in cold country, even if you have a propane type or a alcohol burner that you use for warm weather trips.

Customer Service

MSR will send free replacement parts and is generally a good bunch of people.

Pros: Very light and simple to use. Cons: Had some clogging problems and flame control is difficult to use. But what can you expect from a lightweight.

I have been using a non-shaker Whisperlite for over ten years. This stove works very well and works better for simmering than most would have you believe. The key to it is not to fill your fuel bottle completely, leave room for some air. Only pump it a few strokes to keep the air pressure at a minimum inside the bottle and to use a light touch on the fuel knob. A 1/4 turn is really the full working range of the knob between full throttle and just about turned off.

The bad part of this stove is the pump handle will break on you. Also watch the O-ring that seals the pump on the tank, make sure it has no cracks.

Good stove, works.
Does not simmer.
I have the pre shaker version.
I have used it many years, has never clogged.
Have they made a titanium version yet?
I am amazed at how many people have these.
I like my Sierra Zipp stove a little better, because it burns wood and is a more creative invention.

I'm actually using the pre-ShakerJet model; I assume they're similar.
My Whisperlite's been fired it up hundreds of times over 15 years with nary a cold meal. I carry a maintenance kit just in case, but haven't needed it. Every few years I inspect the pump and replace O rings. My only complaint is that it never wears out, so I haven't an excuse to try something else.

As an engineer and the revolutionary Father of lightweight backpacking I must say this is the only stove one needs to own. Stove evolution has reached its pinnacle with the whisperlite. Generally I don't endorse commercially made products but this stove is such a relentless delight it deserves a grand approval. Accompanying me on my thru-hikes of the A.T., C.D.T. and P.C.T., I utilized this efficient gem for over 10,000 trail miles without so much as a clogged port. For what this stove does it's worth a whole lot more than $50, trust me. "The MSR whisperlite stove is a timeless marvel." -R.J.

This stove is my trusted friend and companion through travels along the east coast and to my native homeland as well I can't think of a better stove to take my family of ten camping with me when we are in harlem it helps us to prepare meals just like Jesse and when on trips it flares away like a giant roman candle fuel is cheep too and can be had anywhere don't believe them though because you can use unleaded without buying a more expensive one even though they say that you have to buy a more expensive one you don't sometimes this stove though doesn't cook chitterlings well as you need to simmer for a long time butt canned corned beef in the skillet waking up with a cup of coffee is hard to beat in upstate

This is a nice stove-if you need to do some blacksmithing or perhaps melt rocks in the backcountry. But for cooking? Acetylene torches have more delicate flame control.

Cleaning soot off the damn thing ain't no fun either. MSR obviously sold their souls to the devil to make these stoves popular.
