I HAD A PROPANE ONE BURNER STOVE AND THOSE THINGS SUCK!!!! MY FRIEND AND DECIDED THAT WE NEEDED TO GET BETTER STOVES. WE BOUGHT THE WHISPERLITE FOR ITS PRICE AND OTHER FRIENDS HAD THEM. I HAVE USED SEVERAL TIMES AND HAVE HAD NO TROUBLE WITH IT. IT IS EASY TO USE AND TO MAINTAIN.

I have had this thing for about 3 years, and it has been a very solid performer for summer trips in the Rockies. However, I just got back from a climb on Mt. Sneffels last weekend (february) and the thing performed like junk. There was NO power from this stove. It took 45 minutes to boil 2 pots of water. The temperature was probably 5-10 degrees F. I thought this thing would be solid in cold weather, but I was obviously WRONG. If you do trips at 10 degrees F or below, get the XGK...I know I am already saving up for one!

You either love it or hate it. I love it. Always reliable, boils water in 4 minutes. The finesse thing is right on though. Be light with the priming and don''t overfill the bottle. Also, check that o-ring or you will have fire where you don''t want it. Also, store the sucker with the flex tubing extended, I can''t emphasize this enough. Don''t leave it in your pan all folded up with moisture, you will have a crack over time. It takes skill and patience, but for reliability, I doubt that I shall ever need another stove, ever.

Without a doubt the best stove is a warm campfire under the starry skies, but since we live in the times of tree-hugging Marxist environmental groups and their propaganda the whisperlite makes a fine alternative. Though it could never replace a comforting oak log fueling a fire in the American backwoods, it does do a better job of preparing a well deserved meal at the end of a long walk in the forest. In the meantime...May America purge these insidious liberal heathens from our trees and our political system to which they cling so we can finally restore the past freedoms of our wilderness.

This stove has truly tested time and has faced the harshest environments on this this planet. Here in the far north where Jack London is famous for writing about virtually everyone carries this gem as a safety precaution due to the extreme arctic conditions. Since wood is scarce in this region, you best not be caught far from shelter without your MSR if you value your life. Even the local Inuit people utilize this stove as a companion to their ventures, that says alot! One of my favorite meals to prepare with my whisperlite in the spring is fresh ptarmigan eggs, mmmmm good stuff!

This hospitable company quickly flew in a 1/2 dozen whisperlite stoves to replace the ones that fell from our sled into the Hudson Bay while fleeing from a hungry polar bear on a hunt out east

I like the fact the XGK will consume other fuels but it's never a problem finding white gas here, besides, it's way too loud and that bothers our sled dogs

Our company outfits with high end MSR products. The whisperlite is sort of their entry class stove. Usually handled by beginners or those that don't stray off the trail, it makes for an outstanding stove for younger people. In many cases it is the first stove that introduces people to the finer items that MSR produces for only pennies more. I know that our PFLAG group recently purchased about 100 of these stoves to outfit our camping groups. Overall they have been pleased. It has been interesting to see how many have now moved on the the bigger and better stoves that MSR makes.

If you do wind up purchasing this stove, I strongly recommend also buying the MSR trillium stove base to add to the stability of the whisperlite and also the Heat Exchanger. These products will help to add to the performance.

Rugged, durable, few parts, boils water fast, heck, what could be wrong with this stove ?

it is true it is a bit pricy compared to some other MSR products that are expedition class stove. Aside from overpriced, buy this stove for your kiddos...they will beat it up but it will still work. great for Ramen ! Its a winner.

Great Stove,

no doubt about it. I love this stove. You just can't stop this stove from cooking. My wife and I call it the towering inferno. When you want water boiled, its done. I sort of wish I had bought an MSR XGK, which was only 20 bucks more and I think a better value.

Was camping in the Wrangel Mountains in Alaska and the pump broke, but MSR overnighted me a new one. Thanks MSR !

By golly discovering the whisperlite is the best thing that has happened to me since meeting my life partner Bruce. After nearly 15 years of service it continues to work without even a clog or flare up. I really believe the post below me in which this stove is perfection. Why everyone here in N.Georgia has one in their survival pack. Believe it or not I even heard Jimmy Carter has one. Many of us here in Helen use it to cook our bratwursts during Oktoberfest, great fun! To the people who are considering this fine specimen I suggest disregarding the current rash of spiteful posts towards this stove by the obsessive imbecile and his pseudo-experiences and get your self this fine piece of equipment. You won't regret it, I promise! Hell, even if ya don't camp much it makes a heck of a luxury item when the power goes out during a storm.

MSR sent me a free replacement fuel bottle! I shamefully admitted to them I accidentally shot my full MSR bottle of fuel while thinking I was aiming at my junked svea I had painted red. What an explosion! Luckily for me MSR understood

Recently at M.I.T. a group of engineers set out to make the best all around backpacking stove. After 3 weeks of extensive research and testing.... lone behold! a near replica of the classic MSR whisperlite! Yes, it appears MSR has known it all along that they have created perfection. The only difference with the engineers prototype and MSR's master creation was the metal used. The prototype was made of titanium which reduced the weight from 14 ounces (MSR) to 8 ounces (M.I.T.) God Bless science!

Customer Service

they may consider making the whisperlite with titanium to shed the extra ounces
