Day Hiker

I looked for a long time for a good day hiking backpack and settled on the Erratic for a couple of reasons. It has easy access and the size accommodates the gear I usually take with me on day hikes in Missouri and Arkansas. I bought mine over five years ago and it has seen many outings. Today it looks a little abused but has performed very well. I would tell any would-be hiker to give this one a close look.

This pack offers a built in hydration pocket, 34 liters of space divided into three compartments that can be converted into two compartments, along with a few other bells and wistles. At almost 31/2 pounds it's a pretty heavy daypack. This pack is heavy and very poorly designed. It doesn't hug to you're back as it should, it rides rather uncomfortably. The hydration pouch is unaccessable without first removing items already stored in the pack nor is the water blader easily refillable without the removal of the hose. The hose fits through a small opening that requires the removal of the mouth piece. Although this is a large daypack, I don't feel that it holds as much as it should, especially for 3 1/2 pounds. This pack aslo leaks. After a short 15 min of walking in heavy rain I noticed my bag started to seep not to mention the abundance of water that snuck in through the zippers in all compartments. I would never recomend this product, as a matter of fact I'm getting a new bag. I've been looking at arcteryx or possibly something smaller (probably able to hold just as much) like the camelbak rimrunner. I think there are much better buys for this price range. I should have done more research, just didn't think I could be so disapointed in a daypack. This pack would be okay for school or short jaunts but then what the hell good does the heavy duty hipbelt do other than add wieght?

I purchased this pack to take with me to the crag and also for day hikes. Boy has it held up to my expectations. The padding is like none other! It''s soooo comfortable and easy to carry gear. The weight distributes easily to your hips and it''s no hassle to carry a full pack. The hip/chest straps help add to the sense of security when your scrambling around the trail. The interior is also great. Room for all the necessities, but it does get a little cramped in there sometimes. The main compartment can also store a hydration system (which I have on mine, and works great). It also has a pretty big zippered pocket for misc. stuff. On the outside, there''s two mesh pockets for your nalgene bottles, and then a top compartment where you can put keys, cliff bars, tape, wallet, etc. Overall it''s a good pack. Not GREAT, but it does the job well. Recommended for going to the crag (but NOT climbing in) and day hiking. It''s really comfortable, but kind of bulky and not too lightweight. Not too shabby for the price though.
