Strength:

This tent is bombproof and was still made in Camden, Maine.

Weakness:

Slightly more difficult setup, this is not a 2 pole 3-season. Very well made tent with 3.2oz/yd flooring and 2.3oz on the walls but this makes it heavier than a typical tent of comparable size. Quality went completely downhill after MSR bought them out. Instead of being hand sewn in the USA, they became cheap knockoffs made overseas. Many of MSR’s designs were 100% Moss. They even used the same color scheme for awhile but the materials and construction were subpar. No comparison. Bring back Moss!!!

No other tent compares to the Moss Superdome. Yes its heavy relatively speaking, but ten pounds is still light weight for a four season tent that will withstand everything nature throws at it! I use mine mostly for winter camping, with an occasional summertime jaunt. I think the set up is easy, but practice doing it in the dark so you are used to how tensioned the fabric gets during set up. With practice you will find that it is unnecessary to force the poles through the fabric. This tent is AMAZING in bitter cold, high winds and snow. It retains alot of heat if needed, yet it can be easily vented as well. The only minor drawback of this tent is that if you like privacy in your tent, this one is too warm for summer as you will only avoid stiffling yourself if the doors are screen only. Otherwise this is truly a design masterpiece as tents go!

I currently have two tents that I use regularly. I have an REI Clipper tent, which is my three season lighter tent and my my Moss SuperDome. I decided to purchase the Superdome becuase I knew of Moss's quality and I needed a tent that would perform well in the snow. I am a hunter and every October we hike up to our hunting camp deep in the wilderness area of Colorado. Some seasons are warm and dry, and other have dumped over a foot snow on our camp. The first season that I took the superdome with me, it snow over 8 inches on my tent in one night. See a photo here http://www.bjonesart.com/Photos/images/2000_hunt/moss1.jpg This tent was my savior up there. Once I learned how to properly vent the tent in this type of weather, my water bottles did not freeze in the tent despite the below 0 temps. My sleeping bag was only rated to 20 degrees so the tent made a huge difference in my comfort. This tent is Awesome. The quality is second to none, and I should never have to purchase another tent in my life time. I would recommend it to anyone.

What a great tent! // After Spending the night in my Mountain Hardwear Thru-Hiker, wondering whether or not I should fear waking up the next morning soaked with water, or whether I should just ignore the sagging fly and go to bed, I decided that I needed a change. After much searching both on and offline I found the Moss Superdome. I decided to buy it and went ahead and purchased it from REI-OUTLET.com. I've never regretted my decision. As experience has proven time and again, ya get what you pay for. This, my friends, is definately worth the price. Although 10 pounds may seem a little heavy for some people, I don't think so, but for some; the space provided by the tent itself (42 sq. ft.), the head room (48 in) and the vestibule (14 sq. ft.) more than make up for it. My trial run with this beast was a weeklong WTA work party as a base camp tent @ 5400 ft. While not all that high, it was sure high enough for the moisture filled clouds to roll in and amoung our camp. Although it was a good break from the bugs, it did work to soak everything that it could get its dewey moisture on, which didn't include anything in my tent or in the vestibule. I remember waking up one night and leaving my tent, going outside and finding everything covered with dew and water, including my tent. I had to chuckle to myself because I hadn't even realized it a had rained. I was so thankful. So for some peace of mind and lots of room, This is a great tent. Kudos to the people at Moss!!! Now MSR...

After an impulse purchase I thought I would regret (It was $300 off retail) - this has turned out to be a great tent. My only justification at the time was that this should vent better than my skyview 2. It does. I have used it for a huge range of activites and it has fit almost all of them. From summer car camping (a bit overkill, but but my wife loves how well it cools off with the slightest breeze) to canoe trips (one with my 6''10" friend and his 40# dog inside - the vestibule wasn''t good enough for him) to hiking trips (on one it rained four days straight and we stayed both dry and comfortable) to winter camping (this tent has stood up to the worst the northern plains can dish out) the only place I have not taken it is to the summits (10 pounds is too much to go to the top of Montana). After 60+ nights the only problem I have had is one of the plastic guy out rings broke so I moved the line to the webbing loop. I also have an older model which does not have the roof zipper to access the roof vents on the fly, but this has not been a big hassle. I like the doors on each end - load up the vsetibule with supplies then go to the other end where I enter the tent and leave my shoes - without having to climb over gear. For the amount of poles and nylon involved it does pack reasonably small. I would use this tent for eveything if it weighed less than 10#! I also need to add that the fit of this tent is great. It streaches so taughtly - there isn''t even a ripple in the fabric. I have never had any part of this tent flap in the wind. It fits on the frame like the canopy of an umbrella. It is also amazingly strong - in the winter I have woken to 10" of snow on top of the tent and it didn''t cause any saging or twisting of the poles. One word of caution - before relying on this tent for shelter - PRACTICE its set up. The five poles with sleeves do take a bit of effort and time but with practice it gets better.

Customer Service

Friendly - Before my first cold trip tried to set it up in my backyard at -25 F and it didn''t want to stretch enough to insert the side poles in their gromets. I called in and they said they would

This is an extremely well made tent for expediations! The tent ventilates well in warm weather. The tent takes a little longer to set up than the Thunderdome GT (which is virtually the same tent using Breaux Clip). This tent is clearly designed for those demanding the most from their tents in extreme weather conditions, i.e. climbing Mt. Denali. Because of this bomb proofing, the tent is heavier and the doors are smaller. If you demand the most from your tent, then this is one to consider

Just so it's clear, I don't actually own this tent. I used my friend's once when we made an attempt on Washington State's Mt. Rainier. The tent was brand new at the time.

As we neared Camp Muir and where we planned to spend our first night, the weather started to get really nasty. We could see for many miles from up there and what we saw did not seem good. As we started to set up the tent on a small platform in the snow we had hacked out, the wind really started to pick up, now not only in gusts but minutes long blasts that would nearly blow you over. The tent was flapping violently, and there was nothing we could do about it. As the two secondary cross poles were half way in, one loose end of each came down on the upper lip of th platform. They both readily snapped. This was definetely a down moment of the trip.

Somehow we got the thing up, with the snapped poles inside, and it did stand, just was horribly deformed. After anchoring the thing out with three pickets, three ice axes, and two trekking poles, we crawled inside ready for an unsure night.

The winds kicked up like crazy for the first half of the night. Somehow though, the thing held like a rock. We estimated the winds up there to be about 90 mile per hour gusts because we were nearly being knocked over before the night started, and that happens at winds of about 60 miles per hour. Then it got a whole lot worse during the night.

This, with only 2 out of 4 poles seems pretty impressive to me. I don't blame Moss for the poles breaking; that was our fault, we just weren't experienced enough.

Obviously this tent isn't necesary for your average backpacker. It's bombproof and super high quality but it's also very expensive and quite heavy. I only suggest it for pretty serious foul weather mountaineers or for those who just can't live without the best. For most casual mountaineers and heavy duty backpackers, I would suggest the Starlet GT, also made by Moss (this I own and will review it as soon as I have more extensive experience).

Customer Service

I havn't talked to my friend about how he resolved the problems. I think the poles are guaranteed for life though.
