Mountain Hardwear Skyview 1.5 Tents

Mountain Hardwear Skyview 1.5 Tents

DESCRIPTION

This 2 person backpacking/camping wonder has two door - each with its own vestibule. The mesh canopy window aligns with the UVX window in the fly so you can see out whether you're sitting up or lying down.

I used this as a solo tent and found it very comfortable. (used occasionally as a two person.) It has met all my expectations of a mountain hardwear tent. This is a well manufactured tent that is quick and easy to set up and held up perfectly during an intense wind and rain storm. It packs up small, which makes it very convenient for either backpacking or car camping.

I bought the MH Skyview 1.5 second hand off the MEC Gear Swap. I have a Marmot Swallow that while amazing, is a bit too heavy for solo backpacking or long trips. I needed a decent 1-2 man tent for when I went solo or for long excursions. I needed a good all round tent to stand up to the often tough Newfoundland weather. After a bit of research and looking, I found the MH Skyview 1.5. I'll break my review down into both the Pros and Cons. PRO: This is actually a great tent. So far I'm quite happy with it. VERY easy to set up for one person. 3 pole design is a pinch to set up for one person. Seams are all taped on the fly and I never had a problem with the tent leaking. I like how the inner of the fly has clips to attach to poles to add strength to tent when guyed out. Plenty of guy points for a 3-4 season convertable. Sky window is a nice touch and gives you a better idea of the weather outside without having to open the doors. Plenty of room inside for solo person, pack and other gear. Having two doors is great for a small tent, no need to climbover someone to get out! Small mesh window at rear of tent aids in ventalation (small gripe, see in Cons). Weight for a convertable tent is quite reasonable.Great/pleasent color. Not a chore to carry. When guyed out, VERY strong in wind/rain/snow! CONS: Only have a few cons. The fly needs a opening in the back to accomade the small mesh window in the rear. Rear window is only functional if fly is off. Needs a way to open/pull up fly a bit in the back to aid in air flow. Vestibules (2 of them) are quite small and only good for storing boots, water bottle. Large packs will have to stay in tent if weather is wet. For some weight freaks, they may find it a small bit heavy for solo backpacking. Overall I think if you need a tent for 4 seasons (like Canada does!)this tent is for you. A bit small for 2 people and gear, but for one person, it is all you will need in a 4 season convertable tent. For all the features and strength, I find the weight is quite reasonable. I am totally confident with this tent in all conditions (except high mountain)and I would not hesitate to recommend this tent at all!

This tent is bombproof. I have used it in downpoors of rain and snow. Use the seam sealer! If you need a vestible to cook in this is not the tent for you. I you want some room to move around this is a good for one person but not two. I broke 6 of tem stakes when the temp was below 0, i guess they get brittle but the company sent me new ones over night. I love this tent but its use is limited because of the vestibule size.

I have used this tent several times and I absolutely love everything about it. The fabric, poles, fly, ventilation and even the stakes and zippers are well thought out and made of expedition quality materials. I live in Flagstaff and every environment from desert to alpine is within an hours drive. The vestible is large enough to change out of wet clothing without drenching the inside of the tent. The set-up is easy and the colors of the tent are cool. I hear so many people complain about weight but seriously what is a few extra ounces matter if you can have the confidence of carrying a fortress on your back. That is excatly what the skyview is. A superb, 3-4 season (all year) convertible tent that is guaranteed to withstand twice as much as anything you will ever throw at it. Trust me I have traveled all around the world using various tents (see below) and nothing compares to this one. I would have gladly pay full price.

This 3-4 season convertable two person tent is as a secure a palace as one could ever wish for while out on the trail. I just got back from taking it on a five day, 65 mile section hike of the Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland AT. I was in this tent two nights in a row, one night was clear the other was a bit spookie. The first night I slept in this tent there was a rain shower and wind gusts that must have been blowing at around 20-25 mph. When the rain started that night, me and my buddy grabbed our packs and bear bags from outside and tried to stuff them into our respective vestibules (the 1.5 has two separate vestibules, one for each door.) Which brings me to my only complaint about this tent, the vestibules, even for a two person tent, are waaaay too small, you can fit your boots and socks and a water bottle in them, but nothing else. Anyhow, we ended up sleeping with our packs in the tent with us, which I thought would be a wicked tight squeeze (he's 6'4, 230, I'm 6'3, 240) but we managed to fit and not be too crowded at all. Anyhow, we survived the weather and the tent performed flawlessly in keeping out the wind and the wet even though I hadn't bothered to inseam it despite the fact it came with a free tube of the stuff. The next night was clear and starry, and the window feature was INCREDIBLE, I can't wait to take it out again for another gaze at the night firmament in the woods. There's a nifty little trick I discovered, if you unzip the sky panel section from the front of the tent to about halfway down its length, you can simply tuck it into the rest of the section that is still zipped in and the mesh sky light viewing section. This allows you to see out the window in the fly, without having to have the section flapping in the middle of the tent, or removing it completly and then having to reattach it, which is a minor pain in the ass. Its a cinch to put this tent up and break it down happens in no time flat, the poles are airplane grade aluminum and won't break. At the end of the day, you can't go wrong with this tent, it will withstand any type of weather thrown at it and is very comfortable. I can't say enough about how nice it is to be able to see the moon, stars and sun hanging out in the window of this tent, by far the best feature of the tent after its reliability. Its interior is roomy and big enough for anybody, I wish they could have applied some of that room to the vestibule, but, oh well.
