I used this tent in brutal conditions on Mt. Rainier early in the season, and the Trango 3.1 stood up to almost all my standards. It accomodated 2 people plus gear very well, though 3 is a little tight, and the pockets spread around the tent were extremely useful. Large vestebules swollowed our expedition packs, and the tent provided very sturdy protection from 40-65 mph winds, heavy snow, and harsh temperatures. I felt that it was a little hard to set up. When we set it up, a sudden gust broke two poles out of our hands, but they were easy to repair. Also, it is hard to set up the velcro held vestibule pole with mittens. Also, I found it to be a little heavier than other tents(Bibler and Kelty tents). I did not own the tent that I used, but I am stronly considering it for future mountaineering/winter camping expeditions.

We spent 2 nights on the Presidentials in NH in moderate wind and low teens temps. Camping 2 to a tent plus gear, we cooked in the tents using hanging Bibler stoves. The Trango 3.1 was easy to set up, stable in the wind, and has the right dimensions for 3 people to sit and cook, and 2 people to sleep with gear.

this is the worst tent anyone could ever buy. it leaked like crazy in a little rain storm one night, and in the morning everything was soaked. the whole next day i couldn't hike because i had to let my stuff dry out. this is a horrible buy, and i strongly urge you NOT to get this tent.

This tent is awesome, I wouldnt trade it for anything. I took alot of time when buying my last tent and now I am very satisfied. Mountain Hardwear is a dedicated company they strive to provide the best gear for the dollar. This tent is bomber and has plenty of room. I wouldnt recommend it for weight watchers, but if you want a good winter tent this is the one. The tension shelve are brilliant the windows are great too. The vestibule is huge also. If your looking for a winter tent for three this is highly recmmended. Ive tried other similar North Face tents and they are stupid compared to Mountain Hardwear. North Face customer service is so horrible. Mountain Hardwear gear is the best faithful buyer and will support them always.

I took my 3.1 on a week long trip to the BWCA and was suprised about how well it did. It rained just about the entire time we were up there with one major storm. During the storm, the wind probably achived gusts of up to 45 50 mph (estimated from inside tent- to scared to get out and see). The tent shook but held firm. If the wind would have gotten worse I could have used the internal guide system. The huge vestebule was able to hold all of our gear out of the elements and there was still room for us to get in and out with out moving anything. Three of us were able to lie down and have room to stretch.(two out of the three of us were over 6ft. tall) The windows in the fly let in alot of light and allow you to see around you with out leaving the tent. When we got back to the outfitter, the three of us were the only ones with dry packs and dry sleeping bags. This is an awesome tent and is well worth the money.

Absolutely bullet proof. We've used this tent in 4 foot snow dumps to howling hot summer winds to raining cats and dogs. Its easy to pitch. Very strong and roomy. A bit on the heavy side but with all the extra room and strength its hard to leave it behind in favor of one of our other tents. If your going to stay a while this is the tent for you.

The winds were whipping, our grip on the mountain tenuous, and the snow was coming in fast and heavy. My best friend and I were sitting out a typical late September storm on what some would consider one of the most arduous excursion in the world - hunting for Dall Sheep in one of Alaska's many beautiful but inhospitable mountain ranges.

Up to this point I thought our Trango 3.1 tent by Mountain Hardware was just another well built, pretty face. But this attitude changed as rapidly as the weather. We sat in that tent for 3 days, with wind and snow buffeting our tent, playing cards, reading and sometimes just staring at the ceiling.

With the occasional break in monotony afforded by cooking under the expansive vestibule, and the often humorous attempts to dash outside in the dark to relieve oneself, you would think that we would have noticed the snow accumulating outside, But it wasn't until we stepped out side on the bright and sunny 4th morning, that we saw the huge wind drifts built up on the side of the tent, and the 18 inches of wet snow accumulation between the cliff wall and the mountain side of the tent. This is when we realized that the Trango 3.1 was a titan. The fact that we were still friends after 3 days of confinement says a lot about the Trango 3.1's roomy interior as well. With the added bonus of seeing a large group of sheep, that included several legal rams, on the mountain just behind our tent, we were happy campers.

One would think that this, nearly 11 lbs bomb shelter, would be a bit on the heavy side for sheep hunting, but the Trango 3.1 is well worth the extra weight, and easily split between two people.

On the three day hike in, we each carried 40 - 45 lbs, which included all of our gear for a 10 day hunt, our rifles, and our Trango 3.1 split two ways. On the way out we were not so lucky, our packs weighed in at a hefty 95 lbs each. The fault of this burden did not fall on our Mountain Hardware tent, but on the heavy load of sheep meat, hide, and horns that had somehow found their way into our packs.

Buy it, use it, love it!

I used Mountain Hardware's Trango 3.1 for 47 days in the Indian Himalaya. It sat on grass, scree, guest house porch and weeks of snow and ice. I cannot say enough about this tent. When other tents at camp III were getting slammed even with their Alaska walls built up, the FOUR of us were snug and tight in 6 days of wind you couldn't stand up in. I have set it up in a white out and in the rain. This tent is a little more than others but worth every penny if you are looking for a tent to put through the paces, rather than a tent putting you through them.

This is probably the best investment I have made in outdoor gear. The tents is made impeccably. It is bombproof as can be. The tent is ample for 2 people with all their gear inside during the winter and during the summer it can fit 3 (4 in a pinch) without a problem. One of the best things about this tent is the setup, clips for the poles instead of sleeves like some brands, are super fast and easy even in extreme cold. The vestibules also provide an extra 28 sq ft of room for gear or to cook. You also can bring only the fly and set it up in the summer without the tent body to keep weight down. Snow or rain doesn't even bother it a bit. I got it for $275 at an outlet store. But would pay full price, it will last forever.
