By far and away the best 3 person, 4 season tent I have ever tested. I use it as a 2 person tent and it is the best I have encountered for tall people (I am 6'5"") as it is nearly 8' at it's longest dimension.

Customer Service

According to The North Face, the shock cord problem has been fixed with the '99 version. TNF now rates the cord down to a -60 F rating.

The Expedition works quite nicely with 2 people during winter months, and 3 will fit snugly, but I highly suggest the addition of a gear loft with use by three persons. Equipment space dwindles rapidly with increased personnel. The tent is highly windproof, and allows its occupants to stay comfortably warm in cold temps. In the summer, I've found the tent to be near-unusable in warm climates. The sun literally bakes you awake, and breathing is difficult under such circumstances. Even without the fly and with the two doors open (screen open, too), it's too darned warm. The price is a little steep, but the warranty makes up for it after one or two replacements/repairs. Also, it's a bit heavy and takes up quite a bit of space in an internal frame pack, but the added warmth is worth the extra weight, IMHO, and could probably be lashed onto the outside of the back with great space-savings.

I have used the Expedition tent in the summer in Wisconson and found the ventelation to be adaquate with both doors open. We have been in the tent with 8 inches of snow over night in the mountain and down to -24 F. It help up very well in the strong tunderstorm wind and heavy rain as well as heavy wet snow. The extra space in the entry is excellent for keeping packs and boots dry and protected.

Great tent.
A lot of space for two. People and gear. However, three is a little harder to fit. Some gear would probably sleep outside.
Feels extremely sturdy, although never really tested in the wind.

the tent is bomb proof. roomy enough for two in the winter, but would never try and fit three in the expedition in the winter months. this is not a tent you would use at all in the dog days of summer, as it get just way to hot inside. i call it a three season tent -- fall, winter, and spring.

Customer Service

regarding customer service, i had to have the shock cords replace on the five poles. in really cold weather the cords would stretch out and not rebound. tnf replaced the and had them back to me in two weeks.

I love this tent. We've had 3 people in this tent with no problems. We use the foot print and gear loft. The vestible(s) provide enough room for boots and backpacks. The quality of this tent is the first thing that caught my attention. It's built very well. I'd buy another North Face tent in a minute.
