2015 and my makalu tour is still alive! I got it around April of 2000. Fifteen years and it still works as it should. It has some obvious battle scars, scratches and paint chips but it is still straight as the time it was bought.
The only thing i do not like about these poles is the grip. It is made of plastic... I have sweaty hands and my grip slips when i put my weight on it when at difficult sections of a trail.

Black Diamond and Kovea trekking poles. These are modern poles but they are heavier than my makalu tour. I like the soft sticky rubber grips on these better than the plastic grips of my leki.

In a word: Fantastical! I've used ski poles for years, but never thought I would use similiar poles for hiking. But once you start using trekking poles, you'll never go back to using a staff or bare-handing... They antishock mech works and they fold up small...Indispensable! Pros: All-around stability Downhill knee-savers Extra power uphill Safe stream-crossings Tarp/tent poles Clothes drying rack Bear defense Whining hiker-buddy discipline stick Cons: Ummm, still thinking, but some models are expensive when compared to ski-poles LEKI poles are awesome and Campmor has a nice deal on this pair. (I think the "tour" model is nearly identical to Makalu Antishock, though)

These poles are just about the best value I could find for the price. You can find a product on sale with the same features as this for slightly less, but the Leki standard of quality made me buy these. They have everything you need, with nothing you don''t. The hand grips are comfortable, the lock system tried-and-true, and the springs adequate. The only minor complaint that I can find is that the springs on one pole are slightly "springier" than the springs on the other. After being slightly annoyed at this for a few hours, I ended up completely forgetting about it. I believe that the springs are adjustable, though, so I''ll try that when I get the chance.

Half way up the "hill" on my last trip I swipped one of these polls from my partner and used it for the next 8 days. The first thing I did when I returned home was purchase my own pair. Good balance + good weight + good value = great polls.

I really like the quality of the Makalu poles. I hadnt used poles before but I heard so many good things about hiking with poles that I had to purchase some. I am convinced that the help significantly and would not hike without them. Lekki seems to be a good brand and my poles have held up well and appear to be of good quality.
