Katadyn Scout Water Filters

Katadyn Scout Water Filters

DESCRIPTION

The Scout is both a filter and purifier. It kills or removes all bacteria, protozoa and viruses when water flows through its tri-iodine resin matrix. We recommend the addition of the Carbon Cartridge below to remove the iodine taste from the water. Double action pump produces 1 pint of water per minute. Purifies up to 200 gallons before cartridge replacement is necessary. Durable plastic body. Compact and lightweight. Great for very small teams and individuals. Shipping wt. 1 lb.

Great functionality. Newer design ('98) even better.

We survived on the Scout for nearly three months through Nepal and India. Our water sources varied from murky-don't-want-to-know streams to mountain rivers to dessert water pumps to hotel tap ""water"". We always had clean water with no sicknesses to report. Water tastes varied on the water source. Two problems though: in warmer weather the pump cannot built up enough vacuum pressure due to the o-ring design - definite panic situation. Solved this by frequently lubing with silicone and pumping aggressively until water flowed. Seconds, the cheap hose connections allow for the acorn and charcoal filters to come loose easily. If PUR fixes the o-ring design and the poor tube connections, definitely a five.

Excellent piece! The new design is better thatn the old with the hoses attaching to the side of the pump instead of the bottom. I had a problem with the first one I bought. The O-rings around the pump handle went bad twice -- once on the trail. PUR replaced the entire unit the second time.

Customer Service

PUR (actually the dealer) replaced the entire unit after the pump failed twice.

I used 2 other water filters that combined have not lasted as long as my PUR Scout. The Scout also produces some fine tasting water without the shoulder wrenching workout.

I have been using this filter for four years. The filter pumps water fast and does filter out all the bad stuff. It has two problems, 1) filter replacements are expensive. It almost makes sense to throw the whole filter away and get a new one rather than buy a replaement filter cartrage. 2) Check valve plugs easy. This requres the filter to be taken apart and the check valve flushed.

Easy to pump, puts out VOLUME! So much better than my old Katidyn. I can actually fill several 1/2 gallon containers in the time it used to take to fill a measley quart bottle with the Katidyn.

While I certainly don't have any complaints about my PUR scout, I still have trouble justifying its use. I have grown up using iodine tablets which take up a tiny amount of space and weigh absolutely nothing. That said, the pur scout works very well, and doesn't take up too too much room in your pack. For the level of protection you get, the price tag isn't that high, and it does keep the unwanted floaties out of your bottle. If you definitely want a purfier, this is a great one to get.

This pump is easy to operate solo. The pump continued to work after 60 days in the back country, but the filter looked gross so I replaced it anyway. Parts are easy to locate. This filter is easier to use than other filters that I have used in the past.

Customer Service

I lost one of the pre-filters and had trouble locating one in a store, so the manufacturer sent me another.

This purifier pumps easily and puts out a good volume of water per stroke. I like the fact that the output hose has an adapter to fit water bottles, bladders etc. This make the process fairly efficient. I've used the Scout in quite a few sketchy water sources and have never gotten sick. I've yet to replace the filter and I know I've pumped more than the hundred gallons a filter is supposed to last. I attach a couple of coffee filters around the pre-filter......maybe this helps extend the filter life a bit. The Scout packs reasonably light and compactly. My only complaint is that the replacement filters do cost quite a bit of money. I got the Scout on sale for $65. A small price to pay for peace of mind.

Customer Service

I have not had to use customer service yet.
