I got this wonderful thing new at an REI sale for $43. I have not used it much at all but the reviews really praise it, it's cheap, and it scored within the top three in Backpacker magazine.

Customer Service

I now love MSR and am buying many of their products

MSR has brought it's knack for the functional and durable into the water filter business with great result. The Miniworks is a compact, field maintainable workhorse that pumps out the juice and is priced right to boot. I never go on a trip without it.

Customer Service

MSR is great. They completely rebuilt my ancient FireFly stove for $25.

I have extensive experience with a number of water filters. The MSR Mini Works is my hands down favorite. It is durable, easy to clean, all parts can be field stripped, replaced and cleaned without tools. After a 5 week Kayak trip where all water was filtered . . . the MSR and the Katadyn were the only ones standing. The MSR at 1/4 the price and half the weight of the Kat. Excellent tool.

PUR (very misleading advertising), Sweetwater (a joke), Katadyn (outstanding filter but heavy and expensive)

The miniworks water filter by MSR is one of the best products I have ever purchased. I am very pleased with the ability to maintain this filter without tools, and that you can scrub the ceramic and get a new filtering surface. The pumping action is way more ergonomic then any other filter I've tried, and I like that the filter is "hard" to pump. If the filter is easy to pump, it means it's not filtering. I've read the instructions for the iodine filters, and I much prefer a great filter, to a "purifier" that requires two passes, and a wait for the iodine to work. No thanks.

An excellent pump. Light weight, and easy to use. It removes everything and leaves you with clean looking, clean tasting(thanks to its carbon core) and refreshing. Also it screws onto either a MSR drmedary bag or a nalgene bottle. Only problem is that it cloggs up and slows down relatively quickly. This can be fixed by regular(daily) cleaning of the ceramic cartridge with the pad provided.

Also tried the PUR hiker. A fast light pump but leaves a bit of discoloration and taste in the water

This seems to be an o.k. filter, however I think I sweat out more water pumping this thing than I was able to get in my water bottle. It is not hard to pump, just takes forever. I was talked into this because of the ceramic filter, and the weight of my pur explorer, however it is just too slow and cloggs up much faster than my pur explorer ever did.

Pur explorer. I believe the explorer is a superior filter, however it is much bulkier to take in your pack.

As almost everyone else has said, this filter is pretty slow. Any slower I would probably go with the less reliable PUR's. I bought this filter because of it's field maintainability and the Nalgene bottle attachment is very handy. Overall I would definatly recommend this filter to anyone.
