I’ve been using the Ushba alpine pitons and the alp wedge for sierra gully climbing. The idea is when it comes time to trim the rack you keep the pitons because they are light titanium. I find this part to be true. Think about it. When do you use pitons: When nothing else will fit, when you are run-out, and for repel anchors. The alpine pitons are soft, so they conform to the crack, which makes them hard to remove. That costs time. They are thin and flexi and expensive, so I find myself not using them for repel anchors. I’m going to switch back to steel bugaboos. I do like the wedge. It is light, sized like a thin lost arrow, and has three clip-in points. Since the price is comparable to steel lost arrow pitons, and they are relatively stiff, they fit the bill. Too bad they don’t make them in more than one size like tapered fat to 3/8 inch.
